I wonder why Ellen keeps trying to adopt dogs when her cats clearly rule the roost. Being a cat person myself, I wouldn't try to force dogs in my household. Because she "loves" dogs in the cute-abstract rather than the the hands-on, everyday, hardcore sense, maybe--or perhaps also because her various lovers are dog people and she does it to please them? FWIW I have a 2 cat 2 dog household, and both rule as far as I'm concerned, but yes, it all depends on the personalities of the animals involved. Even different breeds will have different interactions with other animals of any type. It's a really delicate matter to add any new living thing into a house with pets. I somehow sadly think that even now Ellen hasn't figured that out.

Tried him? Like he’s a detergent? Nice, Portia.

When Ellen and Anne Heche broke up there were rumors that Ellen was promising Anne that they could have a baby to get Anne to stay. It seems like Ellen and Portia are breaking up, and that Portia is initiating the breakup. Maybe Ellen was trying to please Portia to get her to stay. I know Portia did the actual dog adopting but maybe Ellen went along hoping it would help their relationship.

I really, truly think the break up rumors are true. When Ellen had that huge meltdown, it was about much more than Iggy. I feel kind of badly for Ellen. She seems to be a bit tortured.

Sometimes it takes months for other pets to adapt to new additions too. It didn't sound like they gave it much of a chance. But I don't think they gave it very long the last time they gave a dog away either.

Ellen did buy Portia an incredibly expensive horse for show jumping (even Ellen admitted she paid too much), and their move to that ranch was rumored to be solely to benefit Portia's horsey interests. Show jumping is one of the most expensive sports in the world, something that Portia de Rossi's income could never have financed. I'd hate to think that Ellen has been using animals to buy her affection but it wouldn't be the first time in Hollywood.

Portia's income could never have financed show jumping-really? She was one of the highest paid austrialians whilst in Ally Mcbeal (in the top 5, even, if I remember the article I read correctly) and was one of the leads on AD. She wasn't Ellen rich, obviously, but I can't imagine her feeling particularily finacially constrained, pre-Ellen.

Yeah, I also find this hard to believe. My sister in law owns a horse and participates in shows with him and she is light years away from Ellen or Portia wealth.
I still think the dog thing has been sort of blown out of proportion, but if the rumors of adopting 8 or 9 dogs and doing the same thing are true, then Ellen definitely has a screw loose somewhere.

She's not a showjumper -- she rides in the hunter divisions, meaning that she concentrates on form rather than accuracy at speed. It's not the cheapest hobby in the world, but if I can manage to do it, she certainly could, even at the fancier shows, on her salary. I don't doubt that Ellen spent a shitload of money on the horse in question, but you don't have to do that to have a perfectly good time in the sport. We're definitely not talking about someone who rides at the Olympic level here.

I read recently that Bruce Springsteen is being sued by a horse breeder because he allegedly backed out of a deal to buy an $800,000 horse for his daughter. Eight hundred grand for a horse, yowza. That has be a lot more expensive than average. I assume that's the kind of deal Ellen made for Portia, probably to impress her.
I can't help but find the idea of buying someone a horse to make them love you funny.
