I think a lot of people didn't perceive it as racist because they know Ellen didn't mean it that way, but if somebody questionable posted the same image, the perception would be a whole lot different.
Sometimes you have to put aside your intentions and acknowledge unintended consequences. I don't think it's a huge deal to say oops and take it down.

I can see both sides of the issue here, I do believe Ellen meant it as a joke--no racism intended. BUT considering that race is a common, and needed, discussion these days, and that there is an unfortunate history there, it is a tone deaf joke. And yes, that should have been taken into consideration. I think this is a situation where the joke was meant in good humor, but due to the political climate currently--it wasn't the right time for that joke.

When Weird Al used the word spastic in his song Word Crimes, he did not realize its other implications. When he found out, he apologized for real and quit using it during live shows. Ellen should take notes.

I think Ellen should be taking notes on Blake Shelton and his long list of extremely racist, homophobic, and obnoxious tweets from 2009 because he used the same defense as Ellen: that's not who I am and it's not what I intended. It's pretty much the same defense everybody uses when they get caught posting extremely offensive stuff.
That shouldn't be the company Ellen wants to put herself in. If it's not what you intended and not who you are, then don't stand by it. And it's not like I think Ellen's post was that big a deal, but her response was dumb.

Imminent Split? Reportedly selling their Santa Barbara home and Beverly Hills condo in advance of announcing the news. I really hope not. Despite some rumblings that she's a lot meaner than her public persona shows, I do hope the best for these two. The world would be a different place if she hadn't done "The Puppy Episode".

Ellen and Portia buy and sell real estate twice a year, so that's not really the best evidence of a split.
But there have been rumblings for a long time that Ellen is difficult to be married to and Portia has some problems of her own, so I wouldn't be shocked or anything.

Welp. Shit's finally hitting the fan as her show comes under investigation for being a nightmare of racism, sexual assault and general assholery behind the scenes.

I don't like this. After a couple of months of Ellen's terrible behavior finally coming out into the open, she and her higher-ups appear to be trying to save the show and her reputation by scapegoating her staff. Yes, it sounds like a lot of staff have done terrible things and should be held accountable. But I fully believe they were running the show exactly the way Ellen wanted them to. The chief problem on that show is Ellen. Brad Garrett and Lea Thompson tweeted that truth today.
If the show is overhauled and people can keep their jobs and not work in such a terrible workplace, I guess that's a good thing. I just don't like this charade of Ellen pretending to "take responsibility" when she's actually just passing the blame onto others.

Oh I thought her statement was atrocious. Despite the language of seemingly taking responsibility, it all boiled down to: my staff were terrible people and I am the innocent baby lamb just now finding this out. Come on.
