The moment Rosie fell from her “Queen of Nice” pedestal was her interview with Tom Selleck during which the NRA and gun rights got brought up. It all went downhill after that.
Ellen has always seemed like a seething basket of neuroses. I’m sure all that contributes to her reportedly shitty behavior.

I think Rosie went through a long period of depression post-Columbine and it was painfully obvious she no longer wanted to do her show. Gone were the neat pantsuits with the jeweled collars, gone was the coiffured hair. She no longer did any comedy bits. She would just trudge out every day in a Canadian tuxedo and stringy hair, having done zero preparation for the show, and would half-heartedly interview people off of cue cards. In retrospect, I'm surprised that show lasted as long as it did because that seems to be her perennial cycle. She seems to run out of steam every few years and grow to hate whatever project she's working on at the time.

Based on the way her estranged daughter spoke to the tabloids a couple of years ago, that makes sense. I'm sure she loves her kids, but by the time she was raising the younger ones she sounded checked out and uninvolved, due to deep depression.

But at any rate, it's a precedent for how quickly an incredibly popular talk show host can fall from grace in the public's view. I think it's because people expect others and celebrities to be perfect, nice all the time, act like they do on TV. I used to work for a scientist (this is about 30+ years ago) who would have rages that would last for about three minutes. Everybody knew about them. He'd rage and then walk out. Ten minutes later, he'd come back and apologize. It sucked but , humans are messy. A woman I knew at work had a great boss, for about 17 years. Then he screwed them and they all got laid off. So even the nicest boss can screw you. What I'm trying to say is some people just suck, celebrities or non celebrities. People have to stop lionizing them. I've met celebrities and I just view them as regular people. I never bought Ellen's nice act. I watched that interview live. I'd had surgery a few weeks before and was home. I could see why Rosie would bring it up, but when it became apparent that Tom wasn't going to talk about it, she should have dropped it and asked him about the film he was promoting. Rosie just came off like a bully.

famvir, what a cool experience! Just wanted to add: I agree in terms of; we all have pissy days, etc... BUT- this isn't some one off story. In Ellen's case this has been a known secret for years and years and there are a magnitude of stories. In this case right now she has current staff (as well as former, as well as guests, as well as a few celebs) all with individual examples. This is not (in my estimation) a nice person having an off day. This seems much much worse. To be honest, I think the primary issue isn't that she's a bitch, it's that her whole public persona/talk show touts the opposite... her brand is caring and happiness. The Chelsea Handler example is interesting and I agree askye, it's a good juxtaposition. Chelsea's public persona is to be bitchy and bitter- yet I hear many behind the scenes stories of her being generous, kind, and going out of her way. In many ways she seems to be the polar opposite of Ellen. That's the way I see it - everyone, even celebs, can have bad days. You may hear one story that was all, "Celebrity X was a total jerk to me" because they caught them on a bad day. But when you hear the same story over and over again, that's probably their default setting. There have been plenty of stories about Ellen and Corden (though I do think Corden is probably someone who is very good at compartmentalizing - he's probably great to fans and other celebs, but not to "the little people"). That's probably who they are. Rosie, I think, is probably well-meaning but struggles with depression and that makes her do not great stuff (didn't she wish cancer on someone?). I don't particularly care for Chelsea Handler's brand of humor, but she strikes me as someone who can remember that the people who work for her or serve her food in a restaurant are humans too. The celebs coming out in support of Ellen look ridiculous. OF COURSE she's been nice to you. That's the point. The complaint is she isn't nice to the little people. Maybe Ellen just needs to retire her talk show. She sometimes seems so joyless to me. Maybe it's just time to hang it up and move on to the next project. If she loves animals, she can throw herself into some animal-related project, and she'll probably be much happier.

Any one keeping track of who's for Ellen? From the NY Post Page Six: Portia de Rossi Scooter Braun Katy Perry Jerry O'Connell Nacho Figueras Diane Keaton Kevin Hart And the against Ellen: Brad Garrett Lea Thompson Wow, I'm underwhelmed. Where are all Ellen's friends from the Academy Awards selfie? Nacho Figueras has been a big defender of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as well. He’s played polo with Harry pretty regularly over the years. I can’t figure out if he’s the world’s most loyal friend, or if he just really likes flaunting certain connections and the attention it brings him. The cynic in me says the latter.

I'm cynical too. Polo ponies are expensive!

ETA: Apologies if this is a common diminutive, but I had to laugh.

I always ask myself how exhausting it must be to uphold a public persona that is seemingly very far away from a celeb's actual personality. And do it for decades. The stress of that probably contributed to the reported dysfunction on the set.

I think it's a combination of things. Her personality is horrible, she isn't funny, and she is out of touch with her audience. She has too much money, and no one to kick her in the ass when she gets out of pocket. She just needs to retire.
