I think I mentioned that I saw Ellen and Rosie on Comedy Central, in the 90's. Rosie was funny, but Ellen wasn't. I think Ellen was in the right place at the right time; then she came out and that was very groundbreaking and some put her on a pedestal.
Then came her talk show and celebrities wanted to be around her. From what I've seen, her show is pretty light, not hard hitting news at all. But Ellen is an entertainer, not a journalist.
So for years, she's been hobnobbing with celebrities and getting rich. Nothing wrong with that, Oprah did the same thing, but Oprah retired and has done other things. Some people have issues with Oprah, but I know that she donated a lot of money to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC, and she did a story on 60 minutes on The National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Alabama.

His name is Nacho? LOL ETA: Apologies if this is a common diminutive, but I had to laugh. It is! It’s short for Ignacio. The guy who is credited with the snack food was named Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Anaya.

I think it's a combination of things. Her personality is horrible, she isn't funny, and she is out of touch with her audience. She has too much money, and no one to kick her in the ass when she gets out of pocket. She just needs to retire. Chatted yesterday with a friend who used to work on the show and has a lot of ties to daytime tv. He says Ellen is going nowhere - her ego won't allow it. And very unlikely it would have been James Corden as he's owned by another network and they'd never let him cross over. He also said the joke around town is that her apology was not a "mea culpa" - it was a "they-a culpa."

I really liked Ellen's early HBO specials that used to rerun on Comedy Central in the 90s. I can't compare her to Rosie because I only saw Rosie as host of Standup Spotlight and I don't think she really did any material herself. But I can safely say that Paula Poundstone used to blow them both out of the water. Unfortunately, PP has issues of her own. I did watch Ellen's most recent Netflix special. It was called "Relatable" - as in, her friends told her she can no longer do standup because she's too rich and out of touch to be relatable to anyone. I don't think the special was terrible, but I can't remember a single joke or topic from it, which is never a good sign.

OT entirely, but I have always seriously disliked Paula Poundstone's name. I envision a character from the Cathy comic strip.

Ellen and her penchant for practical jokes (especially the "Let's scare the schnikey out of this guest by having someone jump out" schtick) has never been something I've enjoyed.

Whatever happened to Paula Poundstone? She took a step back in the 90s to be a foster parent and adoptive parent to several children, including children with HIV. Later on, when one of her daughters was a young teenager, the daughter accused her of sexual abuse. According to Paula, the claim was untrue, but she did plead guilty to endangering her children by driving them around while intoxicated and got treatment for alcoholism. She did dip a toe back into standup a few years ago. I didn't think her material was great and she was dressed in very exaggerated, "1980s comedian" costume, which gave me the uncomfortable vibe that she was stuck in the past. She's a regular on NPR, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, and she's hilarious! I'm going to have to check that out, I still like her.

Paula Poundstone also has a podcast called, I think, Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone. As famvir said, she’s hilarious on Wait, Wait...Don’t Tell Me.
