I think there was definitely a delayed reaction. We watched that video knowing what was coming, but the people there didn't. They were expecting to hear comedy, and I think it took a while to figure out what they were actually hearing. It seems like an incredibly long time when you watch the video, but it was actually about a minute or so before people were out of their seats leaving.
If I were there, I think I would have been absolutely shocked and probably laughing at how outrageous the meltdown was--kind of like my reaction when I realized Ashlee Simpson was getting busted lip-synching right before my eyes on SNL.

Richards is supposed to appear on Letterman tonight to explain his comments. As if there can be any explanation other than "I'm an a--hole." I just saw on The Insider that Jerry Seinfeld is on Letterman tonight addressing the remarks that fucktard Michael Richards made. Why HE is the designated spokesperson for this asshole is beyond me. Unless he flat out says Michael Richards is a worthless loser racist, I've no interest on how Jerry plans on spinning this. I think Jerry was already scheduled, and Kramer (ha, love that he's being called that all day -as if no one really knows his name) makes an appearance via satellite. People in the audience say that they thought he was going in and out of the Kramer character, and that the apology was very weird and fake. He's toast.

Damn. Kramer was always my favorite Seinfeld character, too.

Bah, Karamer was my least favorite Seinfeld character. In fact, he always annoyed me.
Talk about a career killer (not that he really had all that much, but still). Dude seemed completely out of it onstage. A bit whackadoo.
No matter, what an asshole.

Am I the only one who just doesn't care? Yeah, the guy is probably a racist, big whoop. Lots of people are. If you ask me, it is shocking only it is stupidity, most people, especially famous people hide their racism a lot better. I'd be more concerned, if it were someone with some serious influence. But this guy is just a washed up/has been actor/comedian.

So what excuse will Michael Richards use? Alcohol or a troubled childhood?

lpatrice, yes, lots of people are racist, and yes it's a good thing that he's not in a position of power, but that doesn't make his remarks any less hurtful. And for me, as a black person, his repeated use of that word, and his references to lynching - piss me off to my core. So yes, I do care.

I'm just glad I was never a fan of Seinfeld to begin with. No offense to those that are, of course.

I see your point Killer Tofu, but I'm black too. And everytime hear about something like this, I'm more shocked that people are shocked. I could see how it would be hurtful to some, I personally found it vile and disgusting. But alas, it is just sensationalism, and it isn't going to do much to really address the issue of race relations and racism in this country.

You think Mel is faxing Michael a thank you letter for taking the heat off of him. The reactions (as usual) are scary. What he said bothers me, but he's like most people - he wears a mask. He dropped his. Sometimes what behind masks is very ugly. We shouldn't look away or dismiss the ugliness. It'll just remain and fester. We all should care.
