For some reason I thought she was bigger, like a 10/12. I guess I've only ever seen her in the commercials for the Traveling Pants movies, and anyone would look like a cow compared to those people.
(Not like 10/12 is a cow. I'd kill to be that cowlike. But you know, those pants girls were tiny as hell.)

I'm really not trying to be rude, but how is a size six overweight? I love her hair and makeup. Agreed. Is that what point we are at, where a size 6 is overweight? She might- might- need some muscle tone, but that would not work with the character if Betty is suddenly fit and toned.

She has lost weight from when she did "Real Women Have Curves". She was a a fair bit bigger than she is now in that movie.
Size 6 (UK size 12) is not small but is a fairly average size. But she is fairly short - isn't she about 5' 1"? So she looks a bit more on the big side than if she was carrying size 6 with an average height. It's not like she's Tyra Banks carrying size 6 on an almost 6 foot frame so it all looks in proportion. She's not even really on the Salma tip either which is a petite frame with curves. She's not Rosanne Barr by any stretch of the imagination, but maybe just a bit on the big side for her height. She isn't shapeless - she has a figure happening and is still within a more or less everyday average looking shape. Most ordinary women look like her bodywise so she looks pretty ok in general and has a really beautiful face.
And it's great that even though her figure is average and she's maybe a tiny bit heavy for her height that she has made it in Hollywood and has a hit TV show.
Less controversially I think I've gone off Ugly Betty. Loved the first few episodes then I got less hooked. I've tried to get back into it but it's lost it's appeal with me.
On the otherhand I'm glad the show is a hit for America Ferrera's Emmy success and Salma's involvement.

A US 6 is a a size 8 in the UK.
I seriously cannot live in a world where a 6 is considered big. My mind cannot comprehend that. A 6 is definitely NOT the average size for US women and most women I know are definitely bigger than America.

Don't know what size she actually really is but America looks like an 8 to me IMO (UK 12). But that could be just that whole "the camera adds 10 pounds" thing. She doesn't appear to be that small to me - not huge but not a small lady.

That girl is not even close to overweight. Her waist looks tiny to me in those photos -- and that dress (everything about it: the cut, the color, etc.) looks fabulous on her. She's beautiful. I'm currently a size 2, and she's not much bigger than I am. And I know opinions vary, but a size 6, IMHO, is by no means bigger than average. Size 6!? That's small, even if you're 5'1," in my opinion.

In some photos I've seen of her, she looks a touch like Neve Campbell, interestingly enough. In any case, she's a lovely-looking girl.

My great friend recently attended an Ugly Betty party--the wrap party, I believe? and the first thing he said when I asked what she was like was "She's so tiny". So tomato, tomatoe. She looks lovely to me.

I feel bad for her in a way, because she's going to be asked about her weight constantly. She's joining Kate Winslet in the "Look! Curvy (Voluptuous, 'Real', whatever adjective we're going to use to imply that somehow they're large) women! layouts in the gossip magazines. She deserves to be more than a poster child for non-size zeroes.

I think that often she's quite happy to bring up the topic up herself and say how proud she is to represent curvy women and how her show sends an inspirational message, etc. The way Tyra Banks says that stuff annoys the shit out of me, but I've never really thought America has been smug about it or anything.
