James Tupper says: "The line was never crossed" regarding his relationship with Anne Heche and the fact that both of hteir marriages ended so recently.

Men in Trees hunk James Tupper's off-screen romance with costar Anne Heche didn't start until they were both single, he tells PEOPLE.

"The line," he says, "was never crossed."

Instead, the actor – who earned the on-set nickname "McTreemy" because of his heartthrob status among viewers – says he and Heche "really trusted each other almost right from the beginning" and leaned on each other as their respective marriages were coming to an end.

Tupper, 41, separated from his writer wife, Kate, late last year ("We remain very good friends," he says). In January Heche, 37, announced her separation from her husband of five years, Coley Laffoon, 33, with whom she has a 5-year-old son, Homer.

Though their relationship did not begin immediately, the spark between the actors was clear once they started working together. "Anne and I have wonderful onscreen chemistry," Tupper says. "I'm happy that people like to watch us. It's a beautiful thing."

Adds Tupper, "I adore her, and I'm hopeful for the future."

But does Tupper, who says he'd love to have children one day, see himself settling down with Heche? "I'm not ready to rush into marriage," he says, but "I've never met anyone like her. There's something really comforting when you can truly connect with someone and be understood. Isn't that what we all want?"

Anyone who get's involved with this chick is a glutton for punishment. She is a serial monogamist. And what's worse is she doesn't let go of the old relationship before she has the other frmly in hand.
Kind of like a monkey swinging in a tree..er... or something like that.

Huh. They're a perfect match, I guess; both able to snow the media. Because, as I said before, my on-set spy said that they all new months before the announcement was made.

Wait, those aren't the qualities he fell in love with? Because Celestia was speaking in tongues and telling Barbara Walters about her spaceship incident a full month before he married her. No sympathy, dude.

In the papers, Laffoon claims that Anne once didn't put Homer in a car seat, she often cusses in front of the child, and packed school lunches that Homer "did not like."

Damn, my mom did all of those things. She made me lunches I didn't like every single day. Seriously--sandwiches made of thick wholegrain bread with just a little bit of Swiss cheese and packaged (not deli counter!) cold cuts. It's a good thing Dad never divorced her and she had to confront that in a courtroom.
