I don't remember Annette Benning announcing that she was taking time off as she had each kid - she just did.
She's made one or two movies since having the kids (or in between) but she never made a big deal about anything. But then she strikes me as a woman very, very comfortable in her own skin and following her own instincts - which, in her case, was to stay at home with the kids. (Yes, she's had 4 kids, Julia only has 2, but she did space them out by a few years each).

Didn't she say that she was going to take 5 years off? Oh well, her theatre stint is only going to last three months. I thought that one needed a 6 month commitment to do broadway but maybe the 6 month thing is only if one wanted to qualify for a Tony award? Is it then safe to say that she's not gunning for a Tony nomination because a) she knows that she's not going to do that well on stage b) She didn't want to do it for 6 months... c) maybe she doesn't care about awards at all...or does she? If she doesn't get nominated, I'd bet they'd blame it on the fact that she only did it for 3 months and therefore it wasn't because she sucked. Not that I think she does...

That's a really good point. Because wen you thinkg about it a year is a lot to take off if you've been working consistently for many years. But since movies come out about a year after its filmed, we don't notice.
Anyway, Julia Roberts is doing theatre??? I always thought she'd avoid theatre, since theatre actually requires real acting, and not this horse laugh, huge smle, the public loves me type of "performance," if you can even call it that.

You know, believe it or not, I kind of can. She seems to live a pretty low-key life when she's not promoting a movie. I actually get the feeling she has pretty down-to-earth tastes and needs in her private life. Still, I wonder if after a couple years out of the spot-light she'll get the itch for some attention. She probably sincerely means what she says now, but these people seem to get addicted to being "special."

I completely agree. I've noticed this in JR, too. I wasn't sure if it was just aging, or if she's decided to pretty much drop the "America's Sweetheart" schtick, or if she's actually very unhappy and is having a harder time hiding it. She was the same famous smile, but her eyes are saying "God. Bite me." In comparison, I've noticed that Cate Blanchett - who also has unusual features like JR, maybe even more so - was that sparkle in her eye that indicates that she is happy, and that makes her even more attractive than she already is.
As far as JR disappearing - I could see her do it for a while, since she basically already has. She really doesn't do a lot (out in public) to attract the tabloids like a lot of other celebs. I've barely seen any pictures of her at all since the "A Low Vera" incident except for a couple pictures of her with her kids. But I do think she digs being "special" and would resurface again, because (as Jon Stewart said) "The sun shines for Julia, and Julia alone."

About the smile not showing in her eyes, I read in an interview that she always plastered a smile on her face, fake if she had to, for the razzis. This because she said they're always trying for a bad pic to make them (all the celebs) look bad. So, it's an automatic smile and wouldn't show her true at home face/feelings.
About her staying home, I don't question that she would like it, but Danny would most likely be getting into as much mischief as possible with other women. That would suck for her.
ETA--she does have her own production company so doesn't have to depend on offerings. If she disbands it, she has enough money to pull another one together in the future if she wishes. I would like to see some older women rom coms.

If she's smart, she will realize that he who cheats with you will cheat on you. She lets him run around while she's stuck at home with the kids, he's gonna boff anything that walks. She's not that dumb, I'm sure.

It's amazing the amount of women who can't seem to grasp that simple concept and are stunned, dismayed and horrified when their darling (who was involved with someone else when they hooked up) runs off with their latest fancy.
Of course, she is Julia Roberts, America's Sweetheart, who bought her 'man among men' from his previous wife, so I could just be being cynical.

We should start a new "pool" thread, where we place bets on how long celebs' "breaks" last.
I for one don't believe that Julia is going to retire. I can see her maybe making one film a year while the babies are still small, and milking the PR cows for all it's worth. In combo with that, she can be a guests on David Letterman, be cover girl for Ladies Home Journal with an accompanying article which praises her maternal abilities to the high heavens, and make a 'very special appearance" on an episode of Oprah's show. Retire? Riiiiight.
