About the smile not showing in her eyes, I read in an interview that she always plastered a smile on her face, fake if she had to, for the razzis. This because she said they're always trying for a bad pic to make them (all the celebs) look bad. So, it's an automatic smile and wouldn't show her true at home face/feelings That just proves my point. Before she didn't have to fake it. Now its effort and she can't hide it. And why is it important to smile for the cameras all the time? No one's happy all the time. I think its important for her to show the world: I'M HAPPY! REALLY I AM! She really protects that manufactured public image. She knows which side her bread is buttered on. I guess she saw Meg Ryan's fall form grace as a cautionary tale. You've got to admit she didn't have the same fall out.

Much as I hate Julia, I really admire that attitude towards the paparazzi. Fishstick Paltrow always has a big scowl on her face as if to let everybody know how horrible it is to be photographed. It doesn't make me feel sorry for her, it just makes me think she's spoiled and unpleasant. Julia is good at avoiding the paparazzi (she obviously makes a much bigger effort than Fishstick), and when she gets caught, she just gives a smile and hurries on her way. Good for her.
I always want to give that advice to Johnny Depp: when you pull your hate down over your face, scowl, and give the finger, it just means the tabloids can write a story about how angry/troubled you are. Even worse, when you get arrested for hitting the paparazzi with a wooden plank, it just means more stories about how violent/troubled you are.

I hope she's sincere about staying home and being a good mom. The first years of a child's life are critical. But, she'll be back. She's gotten a taste for fame and money and all that attention. Some celebs crave it. I think Julia will want to get back to it before the five years are over. It will be like a "part that she can't refuse". I do find it funny that gwynneth said she wanted to retire from acting and hollywood and is now busier than ever and is now wanting to direct. Perhaps Julia will be the same way.

As I said I don't mind if she keeps coming back but no one has pulled out the phrase "consummate actress" from that blurb. That one made me chuckle a little. I like her, but still. ETA-- About the smile not showing in her eyes, I read in an interview that she always plastered a smile on her face, fake if she had to, for the razzis. I read that article about a million years ago when she was at the height of her fame, beauty (although to me she keeps getting prettier), whatever. This was something she has been doing forever, not just recently to show people she is happy. And, like Ginger said, they're looking for a scowl or worse so they can do their creative writing.

Does anyon actually think Julia Roberts is a great actress?
I can understand why people like her or her movies, but do any sane people really think her acting is brilliant? I keep encountering all these imdb posters who do, and I'm shocked someone could actually call her a brilliant actress. Likable? Yes. Movie Star? Yes. Biggest current female movie star? Yes. But, brilliant actress? NOOOOOOOOO!

I have seen most of Julia's movies and have enjoyed a number of them and think her acting has certainly been good enough for the movies she's been in, but no way do I think Meryl Streep has anything to worry about, nor do I think she deserved her Oscar for Erin Brokovich. IMHO, if you were to compare it to old Hollywood, she wouldn't be a great actress like Bette Davis but more like Doris Day - very likeable and all American and does decent work in her films but isn't a great actress.

Eek! I love Doris Day's films far more than Ghoulia's - but I get your point. Bette Davis she ain't. She reminds me more of Joan Crawford.
heavenwithagun, I commented on the 'consummate actress' part of that blurb in the Celebrity Schadenfreude thread. I suspect it means she'll be playing 'ugly' in her Broadway play. ;D

I can see the savviness in that approach to the media. I guess I'm put off by the fact that I can see that the smile is fake, but no one in the media ever says anything about it. Like the the story of the emperor and his new clothes. She's a savvy one.

Why didn't Julia get more shit from both the public and the media for not only breaking up a marriage, but being outright cruel by wearing that A LOW VERA shirt?
You'd think that kind of behavior would ruin her 'America's Sweatheart' image, but i guest not.

I know I've said it before somewhere in this thread, possibly emphasizing a point by another poster but, she actually isn't that bad an actress if she could ditch the ever present smug factor. I'm sure I'd be smug if I were that pretty and enjoying a lifetime of oogling from every hottie in town, but she's supposed to be an actress, so drop it already. And unbelievably, the word "consummate" came from her very lips. You are supposed to get other people to say that about you, I think. ETA-- Why didn't Julia get more shit from both the public and the media for not only breaking up a marriage, but being outright cruel by wearing that A LOW VERA shirt? You'd think that kind of behavior would ruin her 'America's Sweatheart' image, but i guest not. She got a lot of shit from us, or from the FT forums. I was just thinking of why that situation didn't bother me as much as the Pitt-Jolie-Aniston situation. I hated Julia for it but so did everyone else. Nobody was bashing Vera so I felt all the hatred was aimed at the right people, Julia and Danny. I guess the mags smothered the story and protected her image, I don't know, I only read internet gossip. It took me awhile to get over it, maybe until she was bedridden with the babies and maybe just about now my rancor is subsiding.
