I used to like her. She's a hometown gal. But she showed her true colors after her breakup with Benjamin and the A Low Vera t-shirt. Now, I can't stand her and that wide mouth cackle of hers. I hope she goes away, enjoys motherhood and never comes back, but I doubt it.

I finally saw The Pelican Brief this week. I know, I know. I remember thinking she was so beautiful around the Mystic Pizza and Pretty Woman days but she really wasn't. She was actually pretty good in TPB. She had to show shock and grief and was ok. She also wasn't all about the hair and smile either.
I also recently rewatched Dying Young and realized with shock that I used to try to dress like her with the peasant dresses, silver rings, jean jackets. Or maybe that was just the fashion in the early 90's.
The weird thing is I think I actually like her better now. All of the glow and polish is off and she seems like a hard-nosed beyotch. I think it's refreshing next to stars like Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger (although I like her) who are so plastic.

I've always like her. And not always been comfortable posting so! She's one of those actors that I can always find enjoyable. I agree she tends to be light weight and did not deserve the Oscar that year, but I thought she did a fine job in Erin Brockovich...even though other performances were better. I don't see the famewhore part with the Oscar presenting. I just think she's honestly excited (Denzel...kissing Clint). I'll also add that he year she won the Oscar and wore this dress, she looked fabulous!

The A Low Vera and her Oscar acceptance speech made me dislike her. I think she was pretty back in the Mystic Pizza day but now, not so much. I'll rent Closer but I haven't gone to a JR movie at the theater in years.

So much hatred. Of course, I may be biased, because I instinctively hate anyone that the Stinking Media crams down my throat as "America's Sweetheart". And, yep, she stole the Oscar from Ellen Burstyn.

I don't really hate her, but I also don't understand what the big deal is with her. Like, I would never go to the theater to see a movie just because she's in it; she's inoffensive and smiley and bland as an actress, and I just don't see her appeal.
I don't know what it is about big stars like Julia and JLo when it comes to men. Why go to the trouble to steal someone else's husband when you could have anyone you want? And don't they realize he's going to end up doing the same thing to them?
I have to say, my favorite Julia Roberts movies are the ones where she's really trying to act. Like "Michael Collins," for example. You can just feel how desperate she is to get the accent right.

I like looking at her so go to her movies, even like the vein in her forehead--makes her look smart.
The problem, as tsume mentioned, is the ever-present smug factor. If she could get rid of that, she could lose herself in the character more. I haven't seen Closer so maybe she's working on it.
Just repeating something I read on one of the gossip sites but, when she was in The Mexican with Brad (where she met Moder), she said something to Brad like "You could have had me", to which he answered "I still could". I think she was trying for a Brad look-alike, although Moder is a very cheap imitation.

I used to like Horse Face until she stole that Oscar away from Ellen Burstyn. No, I'm not bitter about a push-up bra winning over a genuine performance, why do you ask? Amen, sister. I cried the night she won. Ellen Burstyn was a gazillion times better and more deserving.

Is there anything more arrogant than using your time as the Best Director presenter to wish the baby nurse happy birthday? Even if your Marva's an absolute wonder with the twins, what the hell does that woman have to do with the Oscars?

I completely agree. It's always all about her.
