Singer Fiona Apple arrested on drug charge at Texas border

Grammy-winning singer Fiona Apple spent the night in a Texas jail after being arrested late Wednesday on a drug possession charge at the border patrol checkpoint where her tour bus was searched, a local judge said.

Apple, 35, was taken into custody in the same town where authorities previously nabbed singer Willie Nelson, rapper Snoop Dogg and "The Social Network" actor Armie Hammer on drug charges.

The celebrity news website TMZ reported that authorities found hashish, a form of cannabis, on the singer's bus. Officials in Hudspeth County, Texas, could not immediately confirm that allegation to Reuters.

The Hudspeth County clerk said a judge set Apple's bond at $11,000 on Thursday.

Asked why so many celebrities have been arrested in the remote West Texas county, Judge Becky Dean-Walker, who confirmed Apple's arrest, said, "because they come through here with stuff they shouldn't have."

Apple, who won a Grammy for the single "Criminal" off her 1996 debut album "Tidal," was due to perform in Austin on Thursday night. The venue's marketing director said the show had not yet been canceled.

The singer-songwriter's representatives could not be immediately reached for comment.

You'd think artists would get better at hiding their weed in Texas when it seems they keep getting caught there.

But then you'd also think that Texas would have better things to do than arrest people like Willie Nelson and Fiona Apple for possessing weed.

Whenever I see that someone has been arrested for possession of marijuana it's like Who cares?! I'm sure the vast majority of these cases end with the defendant paying a fine (with celebrities paying the maximum), so it's just an easy way for them to make money. Assholes.

That said, I know someone who saw her in concert recently and said she was incoherent and pretty messed up on stage.

She looks extremely thin/sickly. Pretty sure hashish is the least of her problems right now...

I-40 bypass, Fiona, that's what all the stoner bands use to get around that border patrol when touring down I-10! Hash is a felony in TX too, since it's manufactured. Interested to see if throwing a bunch of money at that small town makes it go away like other celebrity's misdemeanor marijuana charges, that town is notorious. Does anyone know why the Houston date is still going on, but next night's Austin show is canceled? Court date already?

Aw, that sucks. I saw her at SXSW and she was terrific.

I just saw her in June and she was fucking fantastic. So glad I saw her.

I read that she's vegan now (maybe was only vegetarian before?) but she's always been skinny skinny.

In the past, she has talked about having an eating disorder and OCD. So, that might be why she's so skinny right now.

And I have never seen her in concert, but my friend went to a show around the time of her second album and said she was so wasted it was really uncomfortable.
