I first discovered Elvis when I was 5 years old and saw "It Happened at the World's Fair" on TV. He was literally my first and probably still my biggest crush. The year he died, I was 11 and totally devastated. My mom and sister came home to find me sobbing so hard I couldn't even tell them why I was crying. I still love his music.

I was thirteen, and babysitting my neighbor's passel of kids that afternoon and evening when the news broke of Elvis's death. I called my mom at work and gave her the news; Elvis was more her generation. I remember putting the kids to bed, and watching the tribute on TV that night. They closed the tribute with Elvis singing "Love Me Tender", from the movie, and I got a little sniffly from the poignancy. A few weeks later, I brought The Enquirer with Elvis in his casket to school, and it was such a scandalous thing, we passed it around all day.

I remember when he died. I was so young I thought they were telling me Elton John had died. Elvis= Elton for me when I was little bitty.
When I went to Graceland I was just the chauffeur for my parents. I walked in and burst into tears. Listened to Elvis for the entire 8 hour drive home.

I hate to throw cold water on this thread, but as a black American woman and huge music fan, Elvis Presley is, to quote Public Enemy, "never been shit to me". I will concede that Elvis has never been credibly proven to have been racist and did call Fats Domino "the real King of Rock and Roll". The biopic that removes the child grooming a 14-year-old Priscilla by a grown-ass man and a hypocrite on drugs - sure, The Beatles are a problem in influencing American youth to drugs while you eat pills for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This great video by Broey Deschanel totally takes the "Elvis was a civil rights champion for black America" and the glut of biopics in a brutally great fashion. Plus, I hope Austin Butler doesn't win an Oscar because of cheap sympathy votes; Lisa Marie's death is deeply tragic (my deepest sympathy to Priscilla and the daughters), but it shouldn't be a factor in winning the Golden Guy.

I like a handful of his songs, but, yeah, he doesn't really do it for me, either.
Haven't seen the movie--just have no interest. And Austin Butler bugs me (sorry!).

I hope Austin Butler doesn't win an Oscar because of cheap sympathy votes I wouldn't want anyone to win due to sympathy votes, but he did win the Golden Globe before Lisa Marie's death. To me, it's a good indication about the way it would have gone regardless for Oscar night. But there have been upsets where one didn't win a GG and did get an Oscar.

Particularly on Austin Butler. Dude is from freaking Anaheim, and he's still insisting on speaking in a Southern accent months after the movie was released. Even Lady Gaga (who also bugs me) wasn't that pretentious during her failed House of Gucci campaign. Fortunately, it's looking more like Brendan Fraser or Colin Farrell are going to win. Hopefully that bears out because this kid is going to be even more unbearable if he wins.

Colin's been giving great performances in movies for decades and Fraser's comeback is warming my cold heart. Austin Butler just bugs me and I'm sick of "playing real people" is superior to embodying a complex human being who exists only on the page. Imitation is NOT acting!

I haven't seen the movie Elvis, so I can't judge, but in their podcast this week Tom and Lorenzo said Austin Butler's performance was really strong from a perspective of mimicry, but that he didn't bring much to the role beyond that. When it was announced that Renée Zellweger would be playing Judy Garland they were originally pretty skeptical but they totally changed their tune once the movie came out. I don't think Austin's a seasoned enough actor to have pulled of what Renee did, following from TLo's analysis of her performance.

I'm bringing my comment over from DListed (where I rarely post) but:
I kinda thought he was a try hard too at first but just seeing how much the Presley family embraced him kinda made me change my tune a bit. There was one moment in "Elvis" in the Comeback Special era where he was wearing the black leather suit and I felt like he really embodied Elvis' spirit and wasn't just mimicking him. He also seemed game on SNL and wasn't afraid to show some comedic chops. What can I say, I guess my standards are low at this point.
Now if he continues with the "Aw shucks" Elvis accent beyond awards season I will definitely be giving him a bit of side-eye!
