Yeah, but some of the best films are just mindless entertainment. I often love the Mummy with Brendan Frasier for the same reason. Not much of a plot and many discrepancies, but fun to watch.

Ruthless Reviews really didn't like it, which kinda surprised me, as they have liked other superhero movies in the past:

Stan Lee... what the hell?!?! You take one of your oldest, most established mythologies, and then COMPLETELY RE-WRITE and MODIFY the story?!?! Strange...
I thought it was bad. It was so style-whorish, it bordered on the ridiculous. Think Charlie's Angels Full Throttle and you get the picture.
Jessica Alba as a blonde suits me just fine, though. And never have I wanted to be a blue skin-tight costume so much. But all of them (ALL!!!!!) -- with the exception of Chris Evans --- were horrendously miscast. Not even CLOSE to the comic book heroes. For any Fantastic Four fans out there, I think you'd agree that based on the comic, the cast should have looked something like this:
Mr. Fantastic -- David Strathairn. Google him if yo don't know who he is. Yes, in the comics he's that old -- and if you're a Fantastic Four (comics) fan, I'm pretty sure you'll agree that this guy IS Mr. Fantastic.
Invisible Girl -- Julie Bowen ("Carol" from "Ed"). She's the epitome of the blonde, blue-eyed, all american woman in the comics, so its bizarre why they got a latina brunette.
Human Torch -- keep Chris Evans.
The Thing -- Rick Rossovich. Again, Google him if you don't know who he is. He's supposed to be the best friend of Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) therefore should be the same age thereabouts. He's also a veteran pilot and is TALL and physically imposing. Much like the Ben Grimm in the comics.
Dr. Doom -- Michael Ironside. Again, in the comics Victor Von Doom was Reed Richard's college rival. He also toppled a dictatorship in Latveria, therefore Julian McMahon was way too young.
*sigh* Yes, I have way too much time in my hands. And yes, I am a casting consultant by profession, no kidding.

I just came back from it and all in all, a big fat meh. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't good. I think the problem was that it felt like there was no story. No buildup, no climax, no resolution, nothing. You would think that in the span of 2 hours something would happen, anything at all, but nope. You have it exactly. This was our reaction as we left the theater. And this is why I can't se this movie again: For such a fluffy, benign movie, I cannot believe how grossed out I was during certain scenes. All of Ben's scene with the blind woman made me so uncomfortable. I understand that the message was supposed to follow the idea that she sees the real Ben, the beautiful soul under the rock, but all I kept thinking was "He's so ugly he can only date a blind woman." And the line at the end about her helping him work on his touch...[Sideshow Bob shudder] ghhuuuhhhhhh (Insert* your own rock as hard-on joke here.)[/SBS] *Insert. I just grossed my self out again) And I certainly will not see a movie that made me think the beautiful Ioan Gruffedd was icky. The scene where his face was drooping--yuck. Johnny Storm (the only character I actually enjoyed in this film) was right. Mr. Fantastic's powers were gross. The theatre I saw it at was sold out, full audience of all different types - families, geeks, nerds, frat boys, etc - and at the end they applauded. We could have been in the same theater, because our audience had the same make-up and reaction.

It's shit.
Of course I expected nothing less, but hey. The Chris Evans character was so fucking annoying and Ioan Gruffud was completely wasted on such a dull ass character. I did think Jessica Alba's acting had improved since her Dark Angel/Honey days but that's not saying much. She still only feels natural being either petulant (that will be those lips) or 'tudey, but what the fuck ever, she's superhumanly beautiful and that's why she gets hired.
I know The Incredibles supposedly ripped off a lot from the original Fantastic Four cartoon, but all I could think the whole way through this was, 'This is like The Incredibles, only painfully unfunny, flat, obnoxious and DUMB'.

I thought I heard on tv yesterday that Alba won't be in the sequel because she signed on to another project. Can anyone confirm this or is it just wishful thinking on my part that this potential franchise will die on the vine? I had read somewhere else that all the original cast members had been signed for the sequel.

Ok. It may be shite but my six-year-old liked it so we'll be buying the DVD.

I'd be really surprised if Alba wasn't already signed for the sequels. It was probably part of her original contract.

Apparently the sequel has been greenlighted, which is surprising to me since I didn't think it really did much at the box office. And, most importantly, no Julian McMahon.
