Good for her for coming out. It will do nothing but help (herself and others) in the long run.

I'm surprised that people are surprised. It seems like Mariah was the last one to figure it out. Not to make light of the situation, but it was pretty obvious when she went on TRL with her coochie cutters and an ice cream cart that she had had a breakdown. All her "splashes" of champagne, and "eccentric" behavior over the years has been chalked up to divaness, but she was clearly (IMO) still having issues. I'm glad that she's in place now where she can admit it, and seek help. And hopefully it'll encourage other people (especially in the black community--* cough* Brandy) to admit they have issues, and seek help.

It's gotta be hard to be portrayed in the media as unstable and crazy while coming to terms with something like this.

So, I saw this before I hit the page before button, and was wondering why I hadn't seen "Mariah's a Lesbian!!!!?!?!?1!!!!!" exploding across the Internet landscape. In seriousness, it does explain her erratic behavior, and is a very, very famous face to get Mental Health back on the front burner of American issues. You can help Make It Happen, Mariah.

It's fine, but I don't necessarily think Mariah is the best poster child for mental health issues, unless you want people to confuse being extremely spoiled and materialistic with being bipolar.
I'd forgotten that she'd had a breakdown. All I think about in relation to Mariah these days is her being carried around by her backup dancers because she's too lazy to walk and screwing up her New Year's Eve performance with a lack of professionalism.

Agreed. Having a mental illness definitely makes it hard to represent a group. I definitely don’t want Mariah to be the first person people think of when I tell them I have bipolar type 2. It reminds me of a story a professor told about traumatic brain injuries (TBI). She was at a dinner where Gary Busey spoke. He represents people who have (TBI). He’s not a great spokesperson (unpredictable and erratic) for the same reason he belongs to the group. Well, frontal lobe damage and lots of drugs. My favorite part of the story was she watched him put multiple bread rolls into his suit pockets.

She has bipolar II disorder. She was diagnosed in 2001. I don't mean this in a nasty way, but this explains a lot. Hmm as someone who has Bipolar 2 - I would have bet money she was bipolar 1 not 2. BP2 doesn’t have the mania - it has hypomania. So it’s not the crazy over the top type of episodes. Hypomania doesn’t typically make it difficult for people to work with you - doesn’t require hospitalization and you aren’t going to gamble away your life savings. Typically it makes you hyper focused, and driven. - you feel like a rock star accomplishing so much stuff. As my psychiatrist says - you’re the bosses favorite employee. ETA: and the depression typically makes you irritable and bitchy. Though I sometimes get hid in the back of the head (metaphorically) and can’t stop crying. But that’s rare. Usually I’m just bitchy. Sorry for formatting on phone at work.

I apologize if I offended anyone. What I meant was that Mariah might help be "the face" of Mental Illenss, like Magic Johnson was "the face" of AIDS and HIV in the early 90's, and helped the public and the government start actually doing something about research and a cure and prevention. I live in Los Angeles. There are plenty of homeless people here who have no access to social ... platforms? areas? means? whatever to help them with their issues. I have anxiety and mild depression myself. I'm lucky to work in Health Care. Most don't. Andy maybe have a very, very famous person that the public likes will help ease the stigma.

Her autobiography is coming out this September! According to the Amazon page, it's about 368 pages, which seems kind of . . . short, considering the life that she's had? I don't know. I feel like her life story so far could easily fill two volumes. As mentioned earlier this thread, she's hinted about all kinds of craziness during the Tommy Mottola era, so as long we get the whole full story on those years, I'll be happy.
