Just a thought re: wigs on movie sets--
My grandmother was a beautician for over seventy years, and many of her patrons were friends from the beginning of her career. I remember when wigs were a big deal in the sixties, and how many of her clientele would bring their wigs in for a touch-up from Mawmaw while they were under the dryer.
Disney came to our corner of the world to film a movie at the swampy lake nearby, and Mawmaw had the opportunity to supply the hair and makeup crew with some assistance re: the wigs that the women in the film were wearing. She learned that wigs were very popular on movie sets, especially those with unnatural fibers, because they required less maintenance and were far less susceptible to weather conditions like rain or high humidity. Don't know if that's still the case, with so many advances in the field of hair care, but I thought it was interesting, nonetheless.

Curly hair has been out of fashion and seen as a relic of the 90s. It's coming back in Hollywood as a once-in-a-while sort of thing - not really curly hair, but hair that has been fully straightened and then curled back up again. Nicole's curly hair from last night is a lot different from her naturally curly hair. What a time waster! I guess real curly hair is too wild? I have curly hair too. It's very thick and coarse. It doesn't grow down as much as out...like a bush. I don't even try for long hair as the weight of it alone puts me off.

What a time waster! I guess real curly hair is too wild? Time waster, for sure. Like Goop, so many people seem to think that naturally curly hair is an unfortunate personal flaw. And not "doing" something to your hair shows laziness and a lack of concern for your appearance. How embarrassing to walk around with natural curls that lack uniformity and haven't been subjected to an hour of ironing and treatments.

I have curly hair that I have in cute short cut (the front is a bit long so the curls are in display.) I get a lot of compliments, including a lot from men (not that that matters, but I think it shows that not all men hate short hair.)
I do a lot of public speaking for work and my hair is actually part of my brand - it's how people remember me. Um,point? I don't remember

I go the soup and salad route a lot, which satisfies the dieter and the cheapskate. If there's free bread on the table, forget about it, I'm scarfing it. Her natural hair thickness and texture looks a lot like mine. My curly hair has thinned out a lot in the last 10 years, I think it's just the aging process. I went for a short cut with layers that helps with volume and is super easy to style. I remember when she first became famous I was THRILLED that a woman with frizzy red ringlets was considered beautiful (I think I was around 17/18 when Days of Thunder came out, which was her first big mainstream American movie). So I was disappointed when she started straightening it all the time. You are my yoda !!!! More life tips please

I also was wondering if it was a wig. I have curly hair and I have a hard time getting it to grow to the length that Nicole has it because it starts looking damaged once it's very far past my shoulders, and I don't color mine. In any case, I think she looks amazing with her natural hair texture back. I think I've said this a million times, but I always feel a little betrayed by curly-haired celebrities who keep their hair straightened. I feel like they are saying curly hair is inferior. (Looking at you, Keri Russell.) Same, I have always wanted long hair, but I have somewhat fine, but very curly hair and it won't grow consistently past my shoulders. A piece here and a piece there will grow longer, but then it just looks ridiculous and uneven. So shoulder length it is. I remember seeing Nicole Kidman on a talk show where she talked about how her curls will never be the same after all the years of straightening and chemicals. She cautioned against messing with your natural curls because you won't get them back the same. It was on Graham Norton! Funny I just watched this clip the other day during one of my usual trips down the rabbit hole watching his interviews.

I think curly hair is beautiful, but honestly a lot of people don't realize how much work it is. Sure, when it is cared for properly it can look AMAZING. This usually involves: washing it in a very particular way, drying it in a very particular way, styling it in a multi processed way... Then- it can look great. I have curly hair; for me to maintain it takes hours- and I mean like 8 hours- of work. And at that it will look lovely for maybe 1 day, maybe 2 if I am very lucky. Honestly straightening it IS easier.
Unless you are blessed with the kind of curly hair that just comes out looking lovely after a tousle and spritz (I have yet to meet a person like that)- curly hair that is not highly styled can look very unruly. And not in the sexy messy way, in the: gurl brush your hair there are rats living in it way.

My problem is that at some point, any sort of natural wave or natural body became something to be fought against and "tamed". People flatten out all of their hair's natural body, then use a curling iron to add artificial waves and then spray into place. I don't like the final look at all. I follow Dancing With the Stars pro Daniella Karagach on instagram (don't ask me why) and she did a demo of her daily hair routine for when she's not working. Totally non-sponsored. Basically, she just conditions her hair and lets it air dry, which is about the healthiest thing you can do. This is roughly what her hair looks like when she's not working. Gorgeous! But that hasn't been allowed since around the time of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. On the show, her hair has to be like this because that's "done". I'd just like a little more of the former to come back. Of all the female pros on DWTS, Daniella is the only one with healthy, long hair that doesn't need extensions. The rest of them abuse their hair so much it thins and breaks off at their shoulders.

I have naturally curly hair and I just wash and let it dry and it looks great. Way more time-intensive to straighten it for me.

Scarlet, I am very jealous ;p
My hair looks akin to the 1st pic Ginger posted (finer and more frizzy though- not nearly as full and beautiful). If I do a lot of proper care (dry in soft t-shirt, scrunch, add proper treatments and oils) it can be totally spiral curls and lovely too. The thing is, to get that I need to put in so much time. To get the beach tousled waves- which is closer to my natural do nothing hair- well, it does look great, for about 5 minutes. Then it gets tangled and frizzy and limp all at the same time. I am sure climate also has a lot to do with it. If I straighten it (for me this just means brushing it and drying it with an air dryer) it lasts for a few days, looks nice, and I can actually put my hand on my hair and not have my hand stuck there all night.
The point: obviously there are some people with naturally curly hair who can do it with a wash and go/ease that works great. But for a lot of us curly girls we are straightening not because we don't like our curls, but because it actually saves us time! (and we don't look like we haven't brushed our hair in 10 years with forest creatures living in it)
