I'm looking at pictures from the L.A. premiere at Getty Images and the celebs who turned out are just so randomly bizarre! I'm not sure who amongst them are actual Trekkies or just hungry for fame (hello Tori Spelling) but it's fun to see such a large turnout. Almost everyone dressed in sparkly metallics for the sci-fi theme too. The new cast is insanely attractive.
NO SIGN OF THE SHATNER THOUGH. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?

Shatner's pissed off because he doesn't have a cameo in the movie, I'm guessing that might have something to do with it.

Right, I read something about that. Get over it, Shatner.
I got free passes to see it this Wednesday. Can't wait!

I just came back from the screening. It was gorgeous, but I'm feeling somewhat conflicted by their choices.

How can The Shatner get over it? He made Star Trek. He is Star Trek. He ate Star Trek...ooops! Please disregard lunatic rants while I eagerly await its dropping out of light speed into local theaters.

His name isn't Gene frakking Roddenberry so Shatner can go suck it.
I've never quite "gotten" Star Trek - or its appeal, frankly. (Sorry!). But I'll be damned if this doesn't look awesome. I mean, (a) I'm JJ Abram's bitch and (b) the cast! And hoo boy, Chris Pine's eyes. Boy, would I like to go where no man...
It looks like it will gross about a bazillion dollars since even people with no investment in the franchise (I.e. Me) are excited.

A role is a role. They offered Shatner a role, it just wasn't big enough for him--I mean, his ego. And now he misses out. Maybe he'll come around the next time. I'm in major gripe mode for these guys who make so much and are still complaining.

I've always been disappointed in the negative stigma that Star Trek has within the general population that Star Wars managed to avoid. Does the franchise come off as too complex or alien (pardon the expression) or is it the hardcore fan community with its extreme obsessiveness and attention to detail? I will admit that there has never been or ever will be an entity with so much minutiae as Star Trek (it is very easy to have a multi-page debate over which empire has the best hand weapons!) but the general themes of optimism, exploration, and overcoming obstacles without sacrificing your ideals should be universal.
