I read that even Juliette Binoche realized that she was wrong for the role. She said that Malle wanted to work with her so that he could change her image (I guess from the innocent to the seductress or something) and she wasn't ever sure how she should play the part because her ideas and Malle's were very different. I think the film was an unfortunate experience for her. She did seem unsure of herself in the role and the only thing truly seductive about her was her beauty. You couldn't understand at all why Irons would become obsessed with her. I imagine that having no real spark to play off of would have been very frustrating for him.

KarenK, if you like period pieces, have you seen The Virgin Queen? Not as good as Glenda Jackson's portrayal of Elizabeth I but worth a look for historical movie buffs.
Topic: What's Eragorn about? It sounds extremely dubious. Especially, as you noted, after his D&D venture.

Anne-Marie Duff has done some good BBC work and I'm looking forward to seeing what her Elizabeth is like. I just started a thread in Movies. *self-promotion* Basically, farm boy turns out to be the chosen one, has a mentor who is more than he seems (Irons), is destined to hook up with a beautiful and omgkewl elf warrior (female - a bit of Brokeback would make it original and we can't have that), mysterious parentage (I bet you can't guess where this is going...).

Oy Vey. It's like watching a car hurtling towards a cliff. What on earth possessed him?!! He's never done a Michael Caine (e.g., openly doing C-rate movies just for the money) and surely there must be a lot of roles still open to someone of his caliber? If only one of the Harry Potter series since they employ nothing but British actors and almost every other famous one has done a turn in one of the films. This is really quite depressing news. You know what would really make me happy? A film with Jeremy Irons, Alan Rickman (Squeeeeeee), and Ian McKellan. That would be like hitting the Trifecta!

If you traded McKellan with David Warner, you would have the trifecta of my top British actor crushes! Topic? I would love to see Irons work with Cronenberg again. He's a fantastic actor, but his talents have really been misused the past few years.

I was thinking solely of acting talent (which is why I almost included Robert Hardy) but now that you mention the hotness factor..... Let me revise my statement: You know what would really make me happy? A film with Jeremy Irons, Alan Rickman (Squeeeeeee), Ian McKellan and Colin Firth. Speaking of Mr. Firth, I saw him in a recent movie with Kevin Bacon where they played a Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis type who lived the high life full of sex, drugs and alcohol (and that including 3-somes and lesbian scenes). Mr. Firth was looking somewhat old, had gained weight and was not his normal attractive self at all.

I guess it's kind of a good thing that Colin is no longer quite as attractive as he was ten years ago. Because the thought of Pride and Prejudice-era Colin, the distinguished Sir Ian, Alan as Colonel Brandon and Jeremy channeling his Brideshead days, all in a movie together... well, the combination of hotness and true talent would be unbeatable.

Without a doubt. In fact, the cast would probably send sales of The Rabbit through the roof....

Bumped because HBO finally has something on its website about "Elizabeth," starring Helen Mirren as the Virgin Queen, and Jeremy Irons as her one true love who breaks her heart. The two-part miniseries will be airing next month but, in the meantime, Jeremy fans can watch a video preview here. I'm so excited, I can't wait!
