Has anyone else heard about Wuthering Heights being repackaged based on the fact that it is Bella and Edward's favourite book? LinkI am of the opinion that if it gets youngsters reading the classics then it's all good, but that cover's hysterical to me. Reading that article, I realise I didn't actually notice that Twilight made reference to so many other books. That Bella's Bookshelf blog sounds like a really good idea to get the Twilight fans reading further. I do like that Meyer seems to encourage her readers to read other stuff as well. Jezebel has an article about this. Apparently, some of the Twilighters are whining about the book's content. Mainly that it's not Twilight. For example: Ok, admittedly I can understand readers being taken aback by the lack of warm and fuzzy feelings in Wuthering Heights since it is hyped as one of the all time great love stories. But whining that the book also mentions other people is kinda funny. Also, a comma does not serve the same function as a period! Still, if the readers would open their eyes they would see that Twilight and Wuthering Heights do have much in common. Both books are stories about obsessive love and how destructive that love can be. Of course, Bella and Edward's ending is hell of a lot happier than Heathcliff and Catherine's. Also, Bronte acknowledged Heathcliff and Catherine's love for each other just wasn't healthy. Heathcliff is a douchebag (hey so is Edward!) and Catherine is brat who lashes out anyone who questions her "true wuv" for Heathcliff (sound familiar?). To expect Heathcliff and Catherine to achieve a happily ever after is silly. Meyers, meanwhile, gives Edward and Bella the same qualities as their counterparts but thinks their relationship is healthy and normal. It's almost as if Twilight her fanfic response to Wuthering Heights.

I disagree on both counts. I don't see Cathy as lashing out at anyone who questions her love, seeing as she marries Linton and spends most of her time denying it herself. And Healthcliff is much more than just a douchebag, he's a vindictive monster that deliberately does everything in his power to destroy the lives of innocent people. Edward's mean to Jacob and all, but I can't see him kidnapping a child and keeping her from saying goodbye to her dying father. (I can see him digging up Bella's grave and wailing over her corpse, though.)
I like this comment from the Guardian blog:
Bella and Edward are the Diet Coke Cathy and Heathcliff. Just one calorie, not quite fucked up enough.

Has anyone else heard about Wuthering Heights being repackaged based on the fact that it is Bella and Edward's favourite book? That fact just affirms that I need to stay far, far away from the Twilight books. I have never wanted to reach into a book and slap the characters as much as I did when I read Wuthering Heights. You too? I'm currently reading it, and Cathy and Heathcliff are probably two of the biggest assholes in the history of English literature. God, and I thought Edward was a selfish jackass!!! (One wonders what Meyer's take on Rebecca would be.)

The only literary character I've wanted to smack even more than Cathy and Heathcliff is Madame Bovary.

I just finished it. I was disappointed that Bronte didn't go into more detail about Heathcliff digging up Cathy Sr's corpse. I am loving the reactions of Twilight fans.

I can't imagine why you would think Meyer would like Rebecca"Hey, woman I am married to but never call by name! I killed my first wife after she told me she had numerous affairs and may been pregnant by another man! But I never loved her dear I swear!" "You never loved her Maxim, my love that apparently deserves a name? Thank God! I thought you were about to tell me something awful!" Yeah, just don't think Meyer would be interested at all!

Okay. I am actually 300 pages into Twilight and I don't think I can finish. It's that bad. And to give you some ideas, yes, I've ready pretty much every Sweet Valley book ever, at least two dozen VC Andrews books, various bodice-ripping historical romance novels, even slash- and fanfic.
This is one of the worst things I've ever read, and that includes 1) the fanfic where Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran is kidnapped along with a MarySue RI and gang-raped in a cave, yet they still manage to fall in love, 2) the high school classmate's story of being adopted by John Cougar Mellencamp and marrying Andy Taylor, 3) my own high school fiction, 4) Cassie Edwards and 5) the "sequal" to The Secret Garden in which Mary is a lying sociopath and Colin is gay and in love with Dickon.
This is probably the fourth book in my LIFE that I don't think I can finish. How the FUCK did it get published?! I'm serious. How did someone at LEAST not edit the fuck out of it?!

The really scary part? It's the best of the four (at least in my opinion). The only reason I got through Breaking Dawn was to see if the utterly ridiculous spoilers were true (which they were).

That's basically the reason I read them, too. However, I will say that the plot of the first book finally kicks in around page 400 or so. I don't know, I read the books for shits and giggles, but sometimes it's not even worth that.

Shit. They could have cut out about 300 pages from each book and just gotten to the point.
