My 9 month old Dell laptop stopped charging, my repair guy said it's the motherboard (not the AC jack or cord) and if he does it it's close to $300 (the laptop cost not a lot more than that). It's under warranty, so Dell sent me a box to mail it off. Since it's out of juice, I can't even power it up. What's the risk of hacking/someone at Dell getting my SSN or other personal info? This is so frustrating, and I could kick myself for cheaping out and not buying a Mac! Same thing happened to my Dell (RIP since last year). I went thru TWO motherboards, before I finally said "Fuck it" and bought something else. All I can tell you is that they had my computer for a while and did nothing to get into any of my business in there.

I have a question about answering spam emails. I know not to, because it denotes a Hot address, but I've been getting these educational spams, learn to be a dental hygienist, sociologist, etc, and we are bordering on 50 a day now. If I unsubscribe, will I have sweet relief? Or will it release the Kracken?

Responding at all will show them it's a live address. Send it to a spam folder.

Thanks SweetO and Brookie. I just have to figure out how to spam filter on CompuServe. I know the site is old as dirt, but I like it. It's so clean and uncluttered. I like Adobe Photo Deluxe as well. Sometimes just a few bells and whistles are all I need.

Speak to me, Greecie friends, of the Kindle Fire. My mother's making noises about buying a tablet, and Mr. S. thinks the Fire will be a more economical option in light of w hat Mom wants to do (read books, check e-mail, do a little surfing). If you own one, are you satisfied with the browsing capabilities? How do you handle e-mail with it? Any other thoughts? Thanks!

My husband has the fire and really likes it. He does use it for web browsing, but not for emailing. He mostly reads books, does web browsing, and plays games on it. I have a nook and use mine for pretty much the same things.

Thanks for the info -- I'll pass it along to Mr. S and Sunnymom.

My SIL loves hers- she primarily uses it to read, check email, and facebook.
