I have a Compaq laptop that's about 4 years old. It's shutting off by itself automatically, even though it's not overheating. Although it does shut down when I'm doing higher-intensity activities like watching videos, it also shuts down when only moderately warm or even cool. I don't do anything more strenuous on the laptop than watching videos.
(About two years ago, I did have problems with shutting off while overheating--the internal fan wasn't working anymore. I haven't taken apart the laptop to look at the fan--I'm a bit afraid of doing this--but instead supplemented with an external fan. This external fan is working.)
Any ideas regarding what's causing the shutting down and how to fix it?

After a while the thermal transfer agent they slather between the processor and heatsink (that facilitates moving heat out of the cpu and ultimately out of the computer), bakes. With laptops, it is worse since there is more heat concentrated in a smaller package. What we usually do is take them apart and clean off the old stuff and put on new stuff. It's called Artic silver (that is the name branded one, but I imagine there are generic versions now), and it comes in a syringe. I did that with my Toshiba satelite and it put it back to store bought new condition. You also might consider running linux with the LXDE desktop, I do on mine, and my fan vbarely comes on anymore unless I watch video.

I'm thinking of buying an LCD flatscreen TV, as they have come down pretty reasonably in price. Are people happy in general with 24" ones, or should I pay more and get a 32"? I just want it for basic, good-quality iewing, not interested in surround sound or hooking it up to WIFI or games.

Don't go smaller than the 32". I had a 23" 25 year old behemoth in my bedroom that I recently replaced with a 32" and it doesn't take up much more room. It makes watching TV late at night so much easier.

I have a new computer with Windows 7 and it seems it's missing a couple of things that I loved about XP.
I loathe the auto refresh that makes it so difficult to arrange files. Every renaming sends me away from the spot where I used to be to the file's automatic new location, and new files are automatically sorted instead of staying at the bottom of the folder where I could name them as I wanted to all in one go; instead I have to search for the new files, a big problem especially in large folders. I guess it's goodbye to keeping my dozen most important files of the moment in the main folder since they'll now get lost among all the new files that'll be autosorted there when they're saved.
There doesn't seem to be an easy solution to auto arrange/refresh, the opportunity to disable it has been intentionally removed (they should at least have left people the option); I've only found a couple of options online that say you need to install a fix or talk about registry keys (way beyond me).
But has anyone found a reliable guide/download to at least add the most used buttons, Cut/Copy/Paste/Delete, to the toolbar? In XP I only needed one click to select those essential functions, now in 7 I need two and would like to get back to one click.

Does anyone have a recommendation to convert "Protected AAC" files to something that can be burned onto an mp3 cd? I've wasted so many discs!!

KarenK, where are you wanting to put the most used buttons? In the Word/Excel toolbars or somewhere else?
I'm thinking about getting an e-reader. I think it will either be a Nook Color or Kindle Fire. I don't know much about them and don't know many people who have either one. Any suggestions or advice?

KarenK, where are you wanting to put the most used buttons? In the Word/Excel toolbars or somewhere else? In XP it was this bar/area at the top of My Documents/My Computer and below the File/Edit row, where you had the Back/Forward buttons and could add extra buttons to the right. Is it called the Windows Explorer toolbar?

I've been trying to decide for a while now, too. A friend of mine has both and she said she likes the Nook Color better. There are a few Nook vs. Kindle review pages out there if you Google 'em. Gives side by side pros and cons.
