As an added bonus, the alarm goes off even when headphones are plugged in.
I know this, because I have a 5, and the jack is on the bottom. I like to listen to music as I fall asleep, and that wakes the wife, so I use earbuds. My charging base has a headphone connection that I then plug the buds into. Often, they fall out during the night, but I still get the alarm straight from the phone.

A tech question - I have an Iphone 4 and for the most part it works great, except for one thing: a few days ago, I noticed that when someone calls me, it rings but when I pick up the phone I can't hear anything the caller is saying unless I put it on speaker phone or I have headphones plugged in. I've been researching this problem online and have been trying the suggestions I've found, but nothing has helped. I'm starting to think it's a hardware issue (and sadly I don't have a warranty for the phone, so I imagine it would cost a lot to take it to an Apple store?) Has anyone else heard of this and have any suggestions beyond kicking it? (which probably wouldn't help the phone. :-P)

If it is a hardware issue, take it in anyway. We've been lucky getting replacement items for $100-150. Apple is very aware of losing ground to Android phones so they're pretty accommodating if they can be.

It was user error, since I accidentally got olive oil in the little ear slit. (Don't cook with my phone too close to the ingredients, lesson learned.) It eventually cleared up on its own after about three weeks. It is possible something got in there or it got wet at all?

Smitten - I was about to say no, but it did get a little wet one day when I was walking home in the rain. That could be it. It happened about a week or two before the problem started.
Thanks Batmom & kateln, good to know... I was looking online at the replacement prices when you're not covered by warranty and it wasn't as bad as I thought.

You might want to give it a couple days, my iPhone 3s got wet in the rain once and it did the same thing. It cleared up in a couple days. You could even try the rice trick before taking it in.

If it is that the phone got a little wet in the rain, I might try the rice trick. It's been a week since this started and it hasn't cleared up.

Try the rice trick, it does work. But give it 24 hours in the rice. At least.

Someone accidentally spilled water on my MP3 and I tried the rice and sea salt trick a week and half later. It went from completely dead to working just as good as new. I used an airtight container and left it there for a full week. I was shocked it actually worked since I waited so long to do anything about it.
