It looks like you are going to have to Force recover mode: If this doesn't work, you may just have to bite the bullet and take it to the Apple Store. Hopefully, the unit is still under warranty. Good luck!

Which fitness tracker/Fitbit do the Greecies recommend? Or are they a waste of money?

Which fitness tracker/Fitbit do the Greecies recommend? Or are they a waste of money? It depends where you are in your life. I personally think they're a waste of money for me, but I'm somewhere in the middle of the curve--I exercise regularly (could exercise more) and luckily don't have any health challenges or problems with insomnia. I am also nowhere near the fitness or competition level of needing or benefiting from higher end things like a $400 Garmin Fenix and heart rate monitor*. My needs are met with smartphone apps for running, weight lifting, and calorie counting, more or less. Buuuuuuut I think FitBits can be great motivators for people starting out who need to work up to 10,000 steps a day. I had a fitbit for a few months and it was fun but it didn't rock my world, so I deleted the app and gave the FitBit to my mom. I had the FitBit flex, which is the lowest end model (I think). That said, a few friends and colleagues really like their Pebble watches because they have a lot of the functionality of the Apple watch (including messaging) but without the Apple price. *but if Santa is listening...

A friend likes her fitbit because it tells her who is calling her on her phone. So, not really the point of it, but .. a perk?
My tech issue is that my laptop won't recognize my iphone, so I can't sync. I guess it's Itunes that won't recognize it, because sometimes I can download photos from it. I guess I have to call in to Apple support, which just seems so annoying. Genius, my ass.

So - in the last couple of weeks, Pebble was sold to Fitbit. The term I heard was "fire sale" - FitBit is keeping the best pieces of the company and technology, and bye bye to the rest. So, maybe not a Pebble. :-( More here.I have had the FitBit One, but I had to replace it because I kept forgetting it in my pocket and washing it. It does not survive the laundry. So, I upgraded to the FitBit Flex, which is a wrist version. This one doesn't do # of stairs, but it does do sleep. This one has lasted a year so far. That said, I am a trying-to-get-motivated person, not a big fitness person.

Doesn't the FitBit Flex do elevation? I might be mistaken, though.
izzypop, do you think it's helped? My sister is thinking about one, and she's struggling to get started, too. Nothing really interests her and there's always some reason to say no or meh to exercising. I like having data and feedback, but FitBit and I didn't click.

I've got a Garmin Vivoactive watch. It's not as customizable as the Apple Watch but you can get notifications, texts, etc. on it. Plus it's not as expensive. It's got a gps, you can track running, biking and swimming. It does some indoor cardio too which is nice. Plus a step tracker. You can get one with a heart rate I think but I got the one without one. And I find Garmin products last forever. Originally I wasn't going to buy it until my old Garmin forerunner died but after 6 years it was still going strong so I just bought the vivoactive anyways. The only downside is it's kind of ugly. But I find that is true of almost all smart watches. And I did get data fatigue after awhile and stopped looking at the data. But it's really easy to use. I use it mainly for running and steps but you could definitely do more. I have a bunch of family members who are hardcore triathletes and it is the tracker they all use.

I'm not sure that this really helps with exercising. The features I am using are really steps per day, the number of hours with over 250 steps and the sleep tracker. I usually work a desk job and need to get up and move around more. My Fitbit does encourage me to park further away and to get up and move around more, but not so much the actual workout stuff. Maybe that's a personal problem, though. On the plus side, there are nicer/prettier bands to make it more attractive. If she does go with it, I would recommend that it not be worn in the shower - the band can trap water and make charging difficult. Of course, I have an older version - their website shows a newer version (the 2!), so maybe the water issues have been addressed. They have a bunch of different devices at different prices, each with a different selection of tracking things. My Flex doesn't do elevation, but others might.

And I could synch my iPad no problem. Then I bought a brand new iPod touch which iTunes also wouldn't recognize. I ended up uninstalling iTunes completely and reinstalling it and now it recognizes all my devices no problem.
