I finally had my sewing class to teach me how to use my new sewing machine. As soon as I have some more time to practice on remnant fabric, I'm going to be able to start a project. I am a total novice seamstress. I decided that I was stagnating and that I needed to learn something new. So I bought a sewing machine, and I'm going to learn how to sew. And then I will make pretty things. I think I will start with something that sounds easy like placemats or pillows. Whee! Welcome to Sewer-mania. I haven't done anything really interesting recently, but am planning to start on work clothing for fall- maybe a couple of wrap dresses. That, and I need to finish my dress coat. And hem some pants. And...

I need a hobby.
I used to have them! I rode horses for 10 years, did French club, art lessons, singing lessons, wrote poetry....now, I don't seem to do anything except read scholarly books and make toast.
I'd love to be crafty, but the truth is that the craftiest thing I can do is sew buttons or patch jeans.
Sigh.

I love doing silly tournaments with my local sports club. Today, I played in a dodgeball tournament at the beach. The club does it 3 times a year at a bar here in Tampa. And you know what? My team won the entire damn thing, after having never have even going to the playoffs before. In fact, prior to today, we've usually sucked the big one. I don't think anyone is more surprised than us!
I'm pretty proud. Especially because I was completely hungover and thinking I was going to throw up the entire time. We lost the first 2 games because of the hangover effects lingering with our players, but after that? We demolished everybody. I feel great, even if it's just dodgeball. WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!

I would recommend scrapbooking. Not with $75 Cricuts or anything demented, but finding a large photoalbum and start documenting Your Master's Degree Year in Newks. It doesn't have to be maudlin, but instead clipped things from the newspaper (daffy ads, odd products, fun labels frotasty snacks) or coasters from pubs, fliers from campus, etc. You can add little sketches, and the scrapbook is mainly to keep things organized. However, this hobby won't work if you're not a pack-rat "archivist."

I was supposed to take a crochet class today but the lady that owned the place kept moving the damn date. First it was Tuesdays, then it was Sundays at 10 and then Sundays at 11. So I'm giving up on her and going somewhere else later this month.
I feel the need to start scrapbooking. I have a beautiful blank photo albumn that I got as a wedding gift. I was going to use it as a wedding scrapbook but since that was 3 years ago I can't decide if I should still bother or if I should make a book for our recent trip to Hawaii?
starskin, another fun hobby is jewelry making. If you can sew a button you can make a necklace. Plus, it's fun to pick out the cool beads. I never sold anything I made but they make for good presents.

Hmm, those are good ideas. There are a ton of clubs here at the university, but they seem aimed squarely at undergraduates. There are choral tryouts this week though, so if I can whip my voice into decent shape, I'm going to give those a shot. However, I do need something that I can do when insomnia or boredom strike---and they strike frequently.
Crocheting or knitting would be fun! If they had a society for that I'd totally join. Alas and alack, they don't seem to.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Cross-stitch is fun and easy. There are a couple of tricks to pick up, but overall it's really simple -- it's much less difficult to learn than knitting or crocheting (in my opinion). The kits are expensive, but worth it, I think. It's fairly repetitive, but I like it.
Of course it's not nearly so practical as knitting, and it's so expensive to frame... but still.

Cross-stitch/needlepoint is fun. If you want to learn to knit, I know there are online videos around - I can poke around if you want. (It can get to be an expensive habit thought, but that might just be my yarn snob tendencies )

I am a scrapbooker too, and within the past week, I have had two people recommend that I hire out my services. I think that would be a great little way to make some extra money. I know I won't get rich doing this, but it might be fun. People would give me their pics, and I would select an album, and have 3 different prices depending on how much premium paper and adornments, I used. Has anyone else had any experience with this?
