From this[/color] site. A friend who is very into Fairy lore sent me the page and the garden that is made on it is what I am aiming for mine to look like. Ripley, those cross stich patterns are awesome! I am hoping a novice can do it, cause I may have to get one of those kits.

Is it boring that my only hobbies are watching movies, reading and doing puzzles (jigsaw, crossword, sudoku, etc)? Of course, there's the occasional Gamecube or DS game thrown in...

Is it boring that my only hobbies are watching movies, reading and doing puzzles (jigsaw, crossword, sudoku, etc)? Of course, there's the occasional Gamecube or DS game thrown in... If it's boring, then we can be boring together. 'Cuz we have some of the same hobbies. I *love* crossword puzzles. They're the only way I got through some classes in lawschool. When the chap who did the NY Times one for decades died (retired?), I felt like mourning. In recent months, I've exchanged my puzzles for playing Mahjongg online. It's the solitaire version and totally addictive. Once I start, I can't seem to stop. I'm convinced there has to be some sort of method to winning because I've only done so once, in MONTHS, and on the most middle level. But, if there's a trick, I don't know what it is. Is anyone here knowledgeable about Mahjongg? TiaMaria, I used to bead and do jewellery type things when I was a kid and thought it was SOOOOOOO much fun. Of course, my stuff was totally amateurish and silly, but I'd love to see photos of your creations.

Ripley, thank you so much for directing us to that cross stitch site. My problems are solved! Those are what I would make if I could make my own patterns, and now I can (without the added work)!
As for crossword puzzles, ooh I love them, too. And I also went through a mad Mahjong stage.

I loved them, too. And I don't want anyone I love ever to get cancer, but if one of them does, I will learn to cross-stitch, just to make the F*ck Cancer one for them.

Cross stitch and needlepoint are (relatively speaking) easy - if you can sew on a button, you can cross-stitch/needlepoint! As evidence, my one and only needlepoint project, completed during my first semester at law school. (Bought because I moved from Canada to the States, I wanted something homey, and Chatelaine offered the kit relatively cheaply.)

I love thrifting! A while back, I found a Shaun Cassidy autographed picture mounted on an engraved wooden plaque (covered in an inch-thick coat of varnish to boot) for 99 cents. I'd have kicked myself if I didn't get it. God it's so tacky. I just love it! My personal thrift Holy Grail was a Ten Commandments bracelet. It had ten little pictures in it that, tilted one way, showed a commandment, and tilted the other way, showed adorable little kids breaking that commandment (I have no idea how they managed "adultery"). And I didn't get it! It was so beautifully, innocently tacky, and I didn't buy it. How tragic. I used to thrift a lot, but now I just do it when I need something specific that I think I can get- there's one great place that always has fabric and craft supplies. Right now I'm very into doll-making. It lets me indulge my historical costuming interest on a smaller, cheaper, cuter scale. I've made some things for myself, too, but I'm the world's slowest seamstress, so I don't have much to show off yet, although I'm almost finished with one outfit. I keep telling myself that I can introduce myself on costume websites when I finish, but since nobody's waiting to see it, I have no incentive to finish it quickly. I don't have the patience to knit, so I do it vicariously through my mother. She just finished a very frustrating pair of socks and a Fair Isle hat that makes her look like an elf and that she said that was a lot of fun to do. Now she wants to do a shawl in the shape of a Mobius strip. Oh, and on the "Absurd and Humorous Websites" thread I found this site, I've been meaning to show it to her.

Ooh, I likey!!! The color goes with your name. Was that deliberate?
I have to get it together and finish a skirt tonight. It's all set, except for pulling the gathers and attaching the tiers (it's a gypsy skirt in violet gauze.) I want to wear it this weekend to a class taught by the instructor who taught me to make this skirt, so she can see it when it's completed.
