*slowly backs away out of killing range* I really think it's pretty clear that that's what they're doing. How could they not? Why would they go to all that trouble to have Paris melt down if there wasn't going to be the payoff of Rory becoming editor and stunning everyone with her fabulous editorial awesomeness?
Hey, speaking of Rory and papers, why haven't we seen her doing anything for the paper she whined her way into working for?
Well, Paris did it. Though I can't believe there was no one older and more experienced who wanted the job. How did she get it, again? Did they have a hiring committee or just vote or something?

Well, she said she was sleeping with the previous editor, but I doubt that's the way she got it. Seriously, he may have had some influence over the decision. I don't have a clue about college newspapers (we don't have that stuff in my country), but maybe his input was asked.

I think that one of the main reasons this newspaper bit annoyed me is because I was sort of involved with my college paper in college and I always lose patience for shows when they blatently make up their own rules just so the main characters are doing every little thing in the town.
My college was not Yale but we still had a Publications Board made up of faculty from the journalism, photography and advertising departments, student affairs staff and student representatives. I was a student rep and we met twice a semester to discuss the paper and where it was going and what it's been doing. We also interviewed all the candidates for the editor positions and advertising positions. Competition was usually fairly fiece. Students generally would join the paper in their first year, keep working on it and by the time they hit their last year, they'd try for an editor spot. So the editors were almost always seniors.
So I'm just annoyed that Paris is the editor. Especially since I'm fairly sure I remember her saying years ago that she was pre-med. Why would they appoint a pre-med student as editor? Ugh. Why do I expect realism on WB shows?

I don't think my university's paper has faculty advisors (the paper is independent), but the part quoted above sounds really similar. I just got an e-mail on the paper's mailing list that says there will be a meeting to form a committee to evaluate the performance of the managing editor and advertising director (or something like that). They use Robert's rules of order (I think that's what it's called?) at meetings, for crying out loud! Positions are interviewed for, and there are hiring committees made up! We have newspaper ombudspeople (who aren't paper staff) who we can go to if we have a problem! This seems incredibly unrealistic -- if my school's paper can do it when their office is a haphazard mess (compared to Rory's paper) run in the basement of the SUB where people lie around on couches half the time, I'm sure the Yale paper in real life must be more organized than that, and have structures in place to prevent crazy people from taking over. But then as Jensational said, why do I expect realism on WB shows?

I'm not 100% positive about this (I went to Yale but wasn't involved with the YDN), but I'm pretty sure that the YDN's editors hold the position during the second semester of their junior year and the first semester of their senior year. So the editors are in fact appointed during their junior year.
Also, as for Paris being pre-med and also the editor of the YDN, that's not particularly unusual. Yale doesn't have a journalism major and there are plenty of pre-med people who major in non-science subjects (I knew many pre-med English majors). So someone's major really doesn't have any impact on whether or not they can be the YDN's editor.

Ah, so she did get voted out. GOOD. I don't know why Rory looked so sad about, it, though -- Paris is a huge **** and deserved to get voted out.
I HATE that Rory got the job, though. That is so dumb. And does she never go to or write for that paper that she BEGGED to get the job at? Did she harrass that poor guy for hours just so she could never show up or do anything?

I hurts me to say that Michele (sp?) was the highlight of this episode, and he was never really a favorite of mine. The Friday night dinner scene was good, but that was because of the always awesome Kelly Bishop.
Thanks, Mad Elf. Fixed it

Psst...WitchyPoo. That would be Kelly Bishop. She plays Emily Gilmore. I can't watch this show because of AI, but I guess I'm not missing anything huh?

I was glad that some of my previous bitchings were answered: Paris is pre-med (and pre-law too), and there is a newspaper board and Rory brought up her lack of seniority.
But damn last night was boring. Just boring. I couldn't deal. This was a sweeps ep? Bleh
