Overall I really liked it. It was just so nice to be back in that world again. That being said I agree with the criticism that Rory's storyline would have made more sense 5 years ago. Its fine that she is struggling at this point in her life but it felt like early career struggles rather than 30 something struggles. It doesn't help that Alexis Bledel is not the best actress. To a certain extent Lorelai's story also would have made more sense 5 years ago too but I could buy that she was suffering from the 9 year itch. I do find it hard to believe that they would be together 9 years and never talk about having kids. Especially since I am pretty sure it did come up when they were engaged the first time around. I did love her phone call with Emily. I find both Lorelai and Rory annoying at times but Lauren Graham can really bring it acting wise when needed. Emily's stuff was the best as expected.
Agreed that the musical stuff went on way too long. As someone who never watched Bunheads I could care less about their cameos. And the Life and Death Brigade stuff was excruciating. I always hated them and I really did not want to see them again. And their scenes went on and on. I would much rather had more Hep Alien. In terms of cameos and screen time I know it was based in part on who wanted to come back and how much they were available. But if that wasn't an issue I would much preferred seeing Madeline and Louise at Chilton rather than Francie. Paris is the best and I would have liked to see more of her. And more Lane too. I also would have reversed Logan and Jess' screen time. Sookie's one scene was lovely. I really wish they could have gotten her for two. She should have been in the scene at the end. Dean's cameo was totally inessential but I actually enjoyed it. It was nice to see he was normal and happy now.
On a shallow note I loved most of Rory's wardrobe except her lucky dress. It was ugly and not flattering at all. And WTF with Luke's hair!? Did he borrow John Travolta's toupee?
As for the famous final four words I'm with Kelly Bishop. Eh. Its fine. I know most people hated the 7th season and I disliked most of it too but I did think that season's finale was perfect. This one feels like more of a cliffhanger to me. I know ASP has talked about it the Netflix season being the end of the story but I would be very surprised if it didn't come back.
