Trevor Noah to Succeed Jon Stewart as Host of TDS.It's probably good they chose a guy who is relatively unknown in the US. I've seen him on the show and he's funny, if a little stiff and nervous. He'll grow into it. Still wish they had picked a woman.

I don't get it, but I guess I'll have to assume they know what they're doing. It's also possible that the top candidates didn't want the job though. The talent closest to Jon Stewart and the show who may have been offered the job first might have decided against it after seeing the negatives firsthand.

Yeah I was surprised precisely because he has not seemed comfortable at all the handful of times he's been on.
But, at least John Oliver has proven that you don't have to BE American to successfully skewer Americans.

Me, too. I have nothing against him, but when his name was announced, all I thought of were his awkward-seeming appearances. I don't follow comedy enough to have any idea of who else could have done it, so that's not my primary concern. I wonder what they're going to do to the format.

I think that's a tough spot for anyone to fill. I have his comedy special in my list to watch on Netflix--I should watch it to see what he's like when he's in control. Seems like a sweet guy. I hope he can grow into the role. I remember watching Stephen Colbert's first couple of the Colbert Report and it was awkward and a little forced, so everyone has to feel his/her own way.

Honestly, I hope they keep the format relatively the same.
I haven't been able to warm up to the Nightly Show yet because it's so different with the panel. It's almost like it's trying too hard to be different and it really doesn't flow well. I keep watching though!

Maybe he's just the rebound guy until they find who they really want.
Some churches do that after a beloved pastor leaves. Instead of hiring someone new to replace him/her, they get an interim pastor and everyone knows the new person isn't trying to replace the old one, so there are fewer comparisons. When an actual replacement is hired, it's been long enough that the (sometimes rose-coloured) fond memories of the retired pastor have faded.
And maybe he'll surprise and actually be the end guy after all.

For me, it's the fact he's only 31. Will he have the gravitas to pull it off? Will he go after politicians and Fox News with abandon? The 2016 election is too important!!! (yes, this is how I think).

His segments have been a bit uneven, but he could definitely get better with time. It took Colbert a little while to get his rhythm on his show (only John Oliver seemed to hit the ground running both as guest host and with his new show).
I think I heard that Trevor had his own Daily Show-esque talk show in South Africa, so maybe he does have the experience.
Really interesting personal story - his mother is black and his father is white. His father could not legally acknowledge his relationship with his mother, and his mother was thrown in jail for giving birth to a mixed race child.
