or are they there to inspire their team and viewers? I think just this part. I wouldn't be surprised if they got some gifts along the way, or at the very least, scholarships.

The kids got some bikes, and an iPad to stay in contact with the trainers. I like the way they're handling them (so far). Encouragement, but in a happy, fun way.
Speaking of not happy or fun - Jillian! Jesus, she's rough. And Bob. I like Dolvett the best, and his teams always seem to do very well. I see more positive comments from him than the other two, and that works just as well as screaming at the guy laying half on/half off the treadmill. I swear - they're going to kill someone one day. I know they all probably get medical clearance up the wazoo, but I HATE when they all get dark and gloomy about someone losing ONLY 10 pounds a week. Especially as the weeks go on - that's almost impossible. Well, I know they do it, but that's just so unhealthy. It's good for TV, though.

I bought Jillian Micheal's 30 Day Shred a few years ago based on reviews here, and I wasn't disappointed.
Last spring, I had the chance to watch a few clips from The Biggest Loser (Don't know why I never youtube'd it earlier) and I wanted to send the DVD back. She was a monster on the show. It was all negative reinforcement, all the time. And now reading about how the show is geared toward fast weight loss, I'm even more disappointed.
What a contrast to the DVD where she is firm but positive. She challenges and also points out areas where she is weak (In her case, flexibility.)
I don't like supporting someone who pushes unhealthy weight loss practices or body images, although I have to admit she seems to promote strength and fitness over body shape.
Maybe I should try watching more clips...

Yeah, Jillian's always the toughest mutha around and pretty much terrifies the pounds off her people- But in one on one's she can be very kind and understanding. That said- (I've now watched the show) she's down TWO people already and it's only week one . In the previews, it looked like maybe the one woman came back, but it was hard to tell (there are a couple women who look kind of alike) I have the 30 day shread as well and I *shame* haven't done it yet. I watched it when I first got it and realized at that time it was too much for me to handle. I was still getting over an ankle injury and there was just too much hopping and getting up and down off the floor involved. I actually kind of forgot I have it until kanding mentioned it. My ankle's at least 98% better so probably no more excuses for me... I can hear Jillian yelling at me from the DVD Cabinet... oh dear. More on topic- Damn, I have not watched since Jillian left but now wish I had. When and where did they get that lovely Dolvett from? He's just plain DREAMY!!! I loved when he came back in from playing Basketball with the kids and saw everyone lying on the floor with puke buckets and oxygen masks and was all BUHZUH?!? What'dI miss?!?! I know the whole point of the show is for these folks to drop weight FAST, but I think they do need more of a build up. Not that I'm saying they should take it easy on them, but going from couch potato to running 5 or 10 miles an hour FOR an hour and without being able to have their hands on the railings.... yeah, this is why people are falling and fainting and puking all over. Very mean of me, but I'm kinda glad TC was the one to go. He seemed like a decent enough fellow- but he was a high pitched cryer and that would work my last nerves if he said on past this episode. Sorry. Very mean I know.

I'd love to see how they cast for this show. While there are some regular people in there - older, not as pretty - they also make sure to load up on potentially pretty faces for the hot reveal/makeover. I see a few gals in there now who look like they could be gorgeous (the one who quit was already beautiful! Weight or not).
There was a special on TLC (?) about a former winner who had gained almost everything back. Eric something (I'm not a regular viewer)? Anyway, he said when they're done with you, they're done with you. And he didn't have the tools to live his real life again without the overeating. When you're put on that brutal schedule for weight loss, how do you succeed when you have to go home and, you know, work a job instead of work out constantly?

A lot of the contestants that have been successful about keeping weight off actually changed careers and became trainers or some other job that allowed them to be less sedentary. One guy was on a talk show and said he figured he could be a sedentary accountant and dead by 50 or a more active hockey coach but make less money. He chose the latter. I think it's up to each contestant how seriously they want to take the health regimen afterwards and what sacrifices they want to make. It's too bad the show doesn't provide some kind of aftercare but "nutritionist", "trainer", and "psychologist" are all in the Yellow Pages. At some point, you have to do it for yourself.

Oh no. If it's the guy I'm thinking of that would be a shame, because this Eric got RIPPED and was looking fiiiiiiiiine by the end of his run. So if he gained it all back that would be an extra shame. I have some Biggest Loser DVDs and they bring back former contestants to demonstrate the workouts. There was this guy named Matt who I *think* was the first winner. He was in the DVD a couple years after his season and you could tell he was already porking up again. He was pretty fussy during the workouts too and Bob had to get on his ass several times... and this is for folks working out at home to follow along with. So if HE was the guy in the TLC special, I wouldn't be surprised. But if it was the Eric I'm thinking of then it's a crying shame (I'm holding out hopes that there was another Eric or you're remembering the name wrong

There was also the One Ton Virgin (Half-Ton Virgin?), who got ripped with Chris Powell, then regained a lot of weight. He lost his virginity, though. I was pretty into the My 600 Lb Life shows, but I missed the "Where Are They Now?" episode. Did anyone see it?

Aww dang it. Yeah, that was him. Such a pity! I'm in mourning now for his briefly hot abs and biceps... but will just have to console myself by watching Dolvett flex his guns

I'm not surprised that a lot of contestants gain weight back. At the ranch, you exercise all day and can only eat what they supply for you. At home with work, family, etc., you can't work out all day and temptation in the form of bad food is everywhere. Good for the people who have maintained, but for a lot of folks the career change (and subsequent pay cut) and/or paying for trainers and nutritionists just isn't feasible.
Man, Jillian is intense. If she were my trainer I'd probably just spend all my time curled up in the corner sobbing. I hope that burns a lot of calories. I get that a lot of people have emotional/psychological blocks that prevent them from really trying to lose weight and Jillian is just trying to tear down those walls, but...dang. She's scary. With awesome shoulders.
Is one of those poor children actually named "Bingo" or did I read that wrong?
