One of my favorite musicians/composers of all time is Hans Zimmer, who is probably unknown to most of you. He writes neo-classical soundtrack music for big Hollywood movies. One of my favorite CDs of all time, and what I'm listening to right now, is a the Soundtrack to "The Rock" with Sean Connery. Shades of Mahler and Beethoven in the 300+ person orchestra, and some beautiful violin under notes, all done in a semi-modern take.
Whenever I listen to the CD in the car, I become a complete speed demon. And when I'm really low, the music seems to sap out my pain like a magnet.
It's hard to describe and few people understand my passion, but I'm utterly unashamed. Hans Zimmer is the best! From Gladiator to Black Hawk Down, from Last Samurai to Last Romance, from Crimson Tide to The Rock, I can listen to him forever.
Most of my other favorite CDS are those I've burnt myself but, ignoring that, some other favorites are:
Sarah McLachlan's "Fumbling towards Ecstacy"; Cause & Effect's "Trip;" Depeche Mode's Violator and 101; The Best of Billy Joel; Mozart's 20th and 21st piano concerto; Beethoven's Symphonies (1st, 5th, 9th and others); Achtung Baby; Bizet's Carmen; Handel's Water Music; Best of the 80s (3-volume CD compilation); Best of Donna Summer; Best of Dalida; Best of Joe Dassin; Toto Cutugno's L'Italiano.

I love the combination of Depeche Mode and Bizet. (Two of my favorites!)
Right now, I've been playing a lot of...
-Bauhaus "Mask"
-Frank Zappa "Sheik Yerbouti"
-Fleetwood Mac "Greatest Hits" (mainly for "Tusk" and "Big Love")
-Love Tractor "Themes from Venus" (THE most underrated band to have ever come out of the 80's Athens, GA scene)

I love the combination of Depeche Mode and Bizet. (Two of my favorites!) Heh. An odd combination but each is brilliant in its own right. I've only gotten two speeding tickets in my life (mostly because I'm paranoid and I spend all my time whipping my head around for cops). One was to Hans Zimmer's "The Rock" Soundtrack; the other was to "Tusk" on repeat. I was on the road to Tahoe at 3 a.m. with no-one else around for hours around, and I was going about 108, although they only clocked me in at 96. (They snuck up on me without any lights at all, damn bastards, but they luckily caught me in a slow stretch). In any event, I'm embarassed to say that I could easily have been thrown into jail for the speed at which I was going, but I had my then-fiancé in the car who was in a full leg cast and quite feverish after an ACL operation, so they merely gave me the ticket. (Which cost an arm and a leg, btw. Like nothing I've ever seen. Ever!). Anyway, I fully blame all that insanity to the building crescendo of Tusk, blaring out at full volume. Just the thought of it makes me move. Moral of the story: if you like the song, stick to listening to it at home!

Sarah Harmer is my favourite singer so this wasn't very surprising to me, but I absolutely adore her new album "I'm a Mountain." I ride the bus for a few hours every day and it just totally zens me out and makes me happy as I travel. Her voice is so soothing, never more so than on this album I think.

Kafka, that is a funny story, though sorry about the crazy expensive speeding ticket. Between the crescendo and the drums (mick fleetwood scares me but he is an amazing drummer), it must have been a huge rush going that fast with that song playing.

Age Pryor's album City Chorus rocks my world. With only one listen, I was utterly and completely hooked. Stunningly gorgeous and just blows my mind. It's been on almost constant rotation and I listen to it at least once a day. It just gets better and better with each listen, too. Heck, I'm listening to it now! The Return of Fly My Pretties is one that it took a while for me to get into, but once I did, it was total love. A fantastic concept and so many incredibly great musicians. Even the more mellow stuff inevitably gets me moving. I've got the DVD of the concert as well, and I find it impossible to watch just a few tracks off it. I get sucked in and have to watch every single one. Tom Waits' Blue Valentines is another go-to album for me. I always love listening to that one.

I love Jann Arden's 1995 CD "Living Under June." It is just gorgeous. "Insensitive" is one of my favorite songs ever. Alas, I have been disappointed by everything she's released since.
I also love Madonna's CD "Like A Prayer" and think it's her best album ever. There is not one song I hate on that whole album.
Shawn Colvin's 1996 CD "A Few Small Repairs" is great too. A lot of strange lyrics, but haunting and beautiful stuff. Sad she was a one-hit-wonder. Her CDs before and after AFSR kick butt as well but AFSR is the very best.
I've just realized that my favorites are all years old, but the thing is, these days I usually use ITunes and don't buy CDs (it's cheaper, and I don't have to put up with stupid filler songs that way). I will buy Shawn Colvin's new one when it comes out, though-supposedly sometime this summer (what is taking you so long, Shawn? Hurry up, woman! Please!).

Ha, I still listen to Sunny Came Home fairly frequently when I decide I miss 1997. It's weird I haven't heard her other songs, or even thought to look them up given that I enjoy her voice. I still don't know what the hell Sunny came home is about.

I'm in a U2 phase right now - been listening to "War" a lot. Just like when I was 13. *sigh*
Otherwise: "The Bends" by Radiohead is an eternal favorite. *double sigh*
