Yep, it was Joe Sample. I had that song on a compilation cd, now, I don't. How sad.
Another one gone, RIP, Pickett, although, I thought he was already dead. I thought this because I never saw him on tv, at all.

I still enjoy "Pass Me Over"...as well as "Never Love Again" and "I Know What Love Is" or whatever the last song is.. The rest of that CD --- I skip. The follow up isn't as good as the first one. I'm not sure what the problem is with Anthony Hamilton. Love the voice...not too keen on the songs.

C'mon, you don't like "Sista Big bone"?
I like that song and "Can't Let Go" and one other. Name doesn't stick to me. I'm sure it's one of the songs you mentioned, with the exception of "Pass Me Over", becaus I still haven't listened to that song.
Now, that I know it's the 7th track, that'll help me.

Leave him alone - he's 61!
Seriously though? Sly's on that train with Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Doesn't matter what he does. He could beat his wife. (I'm pretty sure he did.) He could eat kittens. He could vote Republican. Doesn't matter. He made "Fresh". He made "Small Talk". Eternal pass. And at least he keeps his crazy private, and doesn't go all "Johnny Rotten" crazy on us.
I think one of the things that drove Sly a little crazy is that it seems that he never got his spot blown up like he deserved. People BEFORE him did, and AFTER, but he never really became a household name like he and his band should've. They took FUNK to new heights.

The reason Sly left the stage was because he had to go puke, due to severe stage fright.

My boyfriend just surprised me with tickets to see Layla Hathaway and Eric Benet on Feb 17th at a small auditorium in NJ. I can't wait. You know I will report back with a review. Ok, the show was last night and it was all that. Eric was first, he looks exactly like on tv, just a bit shorter. He admitted to and joked about liking woman A LOT. He put on a great show, singing "I Wanna be Loved", "India" and other songs from his current CD. He also did "Femininity" from his first album. He closed the show with "Georgie Porgy" and the background girl sounded just like Faith. His band was great with two keyboard players, drummer, guitar and bass. He gave them chances to show their stuff and they didn't disappoint. He was very personable and charming and down to earth. He came down from the stage and shook hands with people in the audience. We had great seats about 5 rows from the stage and I could count the freckles on his nose. Really a great show. Next up was Lalah. She is very short, about 5'2" and kind of thick. She was barefoot in a beautiful black pants set with a long flowing beaded tunic like jacket. Her hair is in collarbone length dreadlocks colored auburn. She sang a lot of songs from her current album, which I didn't know because I don't have her CD, but it didn't matter. I felt every song she sang. She also sang "Forever for Always for Love" and killed it. She came back for an encore and did "Street Life", the song she sang on Joe Sample's album. The girl can SANG. The radio doesn't do her voice justice. She sounds like a female version of her father and can do tricks with her voice I've never heard, without over singing. And again, she had a awesome band, consisting of a bass player (who did background vocals), guitar player (who really should release his own CD, I've never heard a guitar played like that) a drummer and keyboardist (who also played the organ). She gave her band lots of stage time and for a while you forgot you were there to see her, that's how good her band is. All in all it was a wonderful show, the only thing that pissed me off was that this auditorium was a little small venue in NJ that was off the beaten track and there were rows and rows of seats still available. I heard no promotion for the show on the radio or anything. These people are way too talented for that. Lalah sings rings around Beyonce and Eric sings rings around Usher, but because of marketing and media ramming those asses down our throat, the general public misses out on great talents like Eric and Lalah. If you get a chance, please find out if they will come to your city and go to the show.

I saw Laylah Hathaway last summer, with Dwele and Unwrapped as the opening acts. Her set was short (rumor had it that Dwele was being a stage hog) but wonderful. She did an absolutely gorgeous rendition of "I'm Comin' Back" that made it hard for me to listen to the recorded version.
Never seen Eric Benet in concert, only vaguely familiar with his stuff. Sounds like it was a nice set, though.
I like her alright - basically it's all about "Music" for me - but Mr. Ricardo has worn a damn groove into the thing. I get in the car with the fam and out blasts Leela James and him and our 3 kids are all singing word for word, heads bobbin'. I like the texture of her voice; she's a nice female complement to Anthony Hamilton, IMO.

Another question, who sings the song, "Smooth"?
The song goes: what can I do to make this thing go smooth...

iTunes has a 5 song live set by Leela James. live at the house of blues. Not sure if it's an actual CD release...I haven't seen it anywhere. $6 on iTunes
I eagerly await to hear more from Leela James. I liked her debut CD overall.
