Am I the only person that worries that the person on the machine next to me can hear my music and is silently judging my taste? The other day, I was on the cross-country ski machine listening to "Hit Me Baby One More Time" and I imagined I saw a disdainful look on the face of the hot guy next to me. I quickly skipped ahead to the LoveSpitLove version of "How Soon Is Now" and when we got in sync with our rhythm, I then felt obligated to scan through the iPod to find other songs I thought he might like. Just me, then? I'll add it to the list for my next therapy session. Late to the party on this one ... but, no, DNT, you're not alone with that paranoia. I have all sorts of songs on my ipod that I listen to when I walk - Nine Inch Nails "Closer," lots of Guns n' Roses, so much Britney Spears, even some FUBAR. So, even though I've done the "take the headphones off and see how much others can hear" test, I still turn the volume way down just in case! I don't want to be known as the girl who walks to "I want to fuck you like an animal" lyrics!

The Spamalot Cast Recording is great to work out to.

I do the same thing! even though I know you can't hear it (because I check), if a particularly embarrassing/dirty song comes on, I turn the volume down. Especially if the person next to me isn't wearing headphones.
I need new workout music. That is all.

My Krav Maga instructor, who may otherwise be the perfect human, will not stop playing Rage Against The Machine in class. I have begged and pleaded, and she keeps telling me she'll find something else to play, but it keeps not happening, and four hours a week of Rage is TOO MUCH. I prefer darkstep and jump-up for working out. Aphrodite's self-titled LP from '99 has been a standby forever. Interesting. Mine tends to use southern rock, plus some tejano. (I think.) I'd enjoy some Big n' Rich or Van Zant, myself.

I love "Here it Goes Again" by OK Go--It makes me feel like I can run forever. Other favorites include "Cold Hard Bitch" by Jet, "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness, and "Alive with the Glory of Love" by Say Anything.
Of course, I also love "Toxic" era Britney, loud, dance-y techno, and the occaisonal rap song.

I tend toward anthemy guitar stuff. I found Belfegore's "All That I Wanted" on YouTube and it earned a permanent place on my cardio playlist, as did Patti Smith's "People Have the Power". Funny thing is, I absolutely hate the '80s stuff played on most Clear Channelly radio stations, but that era is so rich with awesome alternative stuff. You can't go wrong with B-52's (I hate having to use the apostrophe, but they do) for working out, too, especially their remixes.

Well, I worked out to Joy Division last night. I'm not sure what that says about me. But you know...me being me, my tastes run to 80s alternative and new wave. Depeche Mode (like "Just Can't Get Enough" or "A Question of Time") is really fun to dance around and work out to. And bstewart, I feel you on hating most 80s radio but loving 80s alternative. You could say I'm slightly obsessed.
I used to work out a lot in high school while listening to Bush. It was good for getting the aggression out.
On a semi-related note, I finally decided to start seriously excercising again and was dismayed to discover that I can only do 75 crunches. Nooo! Give me strength, Ian Curtis!

{Insert Ian Curtis-inspired 'hanging leg lift' joke here.}
It's funny you should mention Joy Division. Years ago, I discovered that "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is completely undanceable. But only recently have I found that it's perfect for elliptical training. Who knew?
