1940's big bands. Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman- they're great for walking to.
Grandma will now crutch her way out of this thread.

kw, I love your mix! I'll study it and obtain songs I'm missing. And my music includes all of Spice Girls' albums and Britney's In The Zone and Greatest Hits. I find that in general somewhat cheesy or fluffly stuff works perfectly in the gym, so don't be ashamed of it (spoken by an authentic gym snob).

Dancedancexenu, I got your back. And Fall Out Boy. Like, what is it with my sudden love of all this emo shit? But I can't NOT.
Here's a few songs from my running playlist. I have 82 songs in it currently, but I switch them around every few days/workouts so I don't get bored and end up standing around fiddling around with my iPod to find a good song (as I maybe sometimes do, but I'm getting better). I'm horrible with that on treadmills, but when I'm run-running I can just let it play.
Banquet - Bloc Party Listen To Your Heart - DHT Happy Now - No Doubt Black Beatles - Loo & Placido (a mashup of "Run for Your Life" and the Black Eyed Peas - it. Is. AWESOME.) No Girl So Sweet - PJ Harvey Dance, Dance - Fall Out Boy Helicopter - Bloc Party You're So Foxy - No Doubt Boys Wanna Fight - Garbage I Am - Nelly Furtado Black History Mouth - Death From Above 1979 Slow Hands - Interpol Light - The Editors Give it All - Rise Against Try Honesty - Billy Talent Here In Your Arms - Hellogoodbye When Your Heart Stops Beating - Plus44 Love Affair - Kylie Minogue (must have the Kylie) Crazy - Gnarls Barkley (This has -- well, had a great beat for running, as I learned one run when I listened to it on repeat 18 times. Now I can't really listen to it anymore. I need to stop doing that.)
This is such a great thread. I'm going for a run right now, actually!

Ooh, lixxie, I'm going to have to check out Black Beatles. I love Run for Your Life -- sounds like a great mash-up!

Hey Greecies! I finally got some songs onto my iPod and they've really helped me workout-wise. I'm finding I can easily crank out 3 miles on the treadmill or elliptical if I've got good music to motivate me.
I'm looking for some more songs and wonder if you guys can recommend some? I like a really fast beat. Guitars are good but not necessary. I just put Ministry's Psalm 69 on my iPod and had a great workout listening to it.
A lot of the music I have is too slow for what I'm looking for. Classic rock (The Doors, for instance, I enjoy but it's not fast enough to get me moving. And I love my Depeche Mode but again, need it to be faster. I know there are DM mixes and I'm keeping an eye out at the library (I'm dirt-poor right now so can't buy things).
Thanks for any help!

Ok, my workout list has over 140 songs on it, just 'cause I get bored of listening to the same stuff. Anyway, here are a few that absolutely get me moving - Whipping Post - Allman Brothers Band Touch the Sky - Kanye West Who is it - Bjork All Nite - Janet Jackson Makes me Wanna Pray - Christina Aguilera Think - Aretha Franklin Right Here, Right Now - Fatboy Slim The Fly - U2 (lots from Achtung Baby) Smiley Faces - Gnarls Barkley My Name is Hova - Jay Z Feeling Alright - Joe Cocker Battleflag - Low Fidelity All Stars (get the clean version...) Gimme Some Lovin - Spencer Davis Group What You Know - T.I. Under the Milky Way - The Church and...Band of Gold - Freda Payne, I don't know why, I just love it!

Silent Alarm is a great album for the gym -and since I don't have a workout playlist yet (I'm still re-entering all the tag info after wiping it last month ), the slow songs give me an excuse to stop the treadmill and change tracks. Generally, I find that I need really catchy, upbeat stuff to keep me going (but Auroranorth's right, Big Band works too -I love Fred Astaire: even his singing makes me want to dance). Sugababes and Britney's Greatest Hits are good, but my real favourites are Swedish bands/singers I discovered through blogs, like Alcazar (sort of ABBA-meets-Kylie) and Darin (a poppier Justin Timberlake) -definitely worth checking out if you've got a high tolerance for cheesy pop. Robyn by Robyn's another great workout album; it's more synth/electro than pure pop, but still really catchy and danceable -and the ballads are almost all at the end, just in time for cooldown.

I feel the same way - I hate the non-clean version. I like the cool noise that the editing of all of the m-f-ing makes.
Slightly off-topic...do any of you guys have an Ipod shuffle? If so, do you like it?

Another person who lurks blogs to download cheesy, often Swedish, pop! Yay! I know the last time I worked out was maybe last May, so I honestly forget what music I listened to, except for Madonna, but if I had a chance to test out your suggestions I would probably agree.

Goggle, you probably know about these already, but there's so much fantastic stuff at #1 Hits From Another Planet and Catchy Tunes of Sweden that they're worth another visit even if you're not going back to the gym anytime soon --there's a lot of more "credible" indie stuff mixed in that's still fun, but nowhere near as embarassing to be caught with. Catchy Tunes of Sweden's closing soon, though, so go ASAP.
