Every time I hear "I Melt With You." I think of the Burger King commercial. I used to like it once upon a time, too. However, it's been overplayed on every station that still plays 80s music and as well as the commercial, I don't want to hear it anymore.

Plus, what the eff was "Hallelujah" doing in Shrek? Have we unwittingly scarred an entire generation with premature exposure to Leonard Cohen? My niece was 4 when that came out, and she insisted that her daddy buy her the CD. He refused to get any sort of Shrek soundtrack, but he did get her a Leonard Cohen boxed set. She was 4! It was awesome (and weird) to watch a 4 year old belting out "So Long, Marianne" and that Chelsea Hotel song at the top of her lungs. It didn't ruin Leonard Cohen for me, but nothing could, quite frankly. Who sang Hallelujah on Shrek, by the way? It wasn't Cohen.

I think it might have been Rufus Wainwright.

In a kind of similar vein, I used to enjoy Maroon 5 until I started hearing about how much of an asshat the singer is. That kind of ruined them for me. Kind of like me and my love/hate relationship with Marvin Gaye. (pointing to avatar) I know he was quite the crappy guy.* But my goodness, I was born and raised - and possibly conceived - to his music. It's in my BLOOD. Regardless, once I found out that "Let's Get it On" was inspired by a 10th grader, I've never looked at it - or him - the same way. * Okay, okay. He was a drug abusing, misogynistic, child support dodging piece of crap. There! Are y'all happy now!?

Sleepy, that's some musically precocious niece you've got there!
John Cale sang it in the movie, but for some reason it's Rufus Wainwright on the soundtrack album.

Oh, God, you don't know the half of it. She loves the Ramones (even named her dog Joey), the Beatles' White Album, Iggy Pop, Roy Orbison, and I don't even know what else. She doesn't like Belle and Sebastian though because Mommy and Daddy really like them so it must be uncool. That's weird about the artist switcheroo on the soundtrack. I wonder if it had to do with not being able to get the rights or something.

That's so cool, Sleepy! No stupid Barney music in the car for that girl! Hell yeah! People should expose their kids to decent music from the get-go. Who says you have to give them watered-down shitty Kidz Bop or other nonsense just because they're young?

Currently, greatest hits in my car include - Les Miserables soundtrack, Violent Femmes, Gnarls Barkley, and Kelly Clarkson.
