I was like you until I heard My Chemical Romance's version of it and I fell in love with the original all over again.

Rock and Roll by Led Zeppelin has been ruined somewhat for me after seeing it used in a car commercial. Classic rock songs should be left alone and they shouldn't be in car commercials.

It's not so much a song that's been ruined for me as it is a band. There's a fantastic folk/alt-country band called Over The Rhine that three people I used to know were huge fans of. Let's just say I cared very deeply for these people, and they ended up hurting me pretty badly in one way or another. And yes, they're all still friends with each other. I literally can't listen to the band anymore, because I just start crying like a complete idiot, no matter what song I hear. It's a shame, too, because Over The Rhine is so good. In fact, "Long Lost Brother" might be one of my favorite songs, period. But it brings up way too many painful memories and I don't know that I'll ever be able to listen to any of their songs for a very long time.
Sigh. I'm a downer, I know.

Aw, Starskin, I"m sorry. That's yucky. But hey, OTR is from my hometown, so maybe you can start associating their music with your new Greecie friends?

Yep, Sleepy. The people I used to be friends with would fly up to Cincinnati every year to catch a show---they were hardcore into OTR. All the bad stuff started happening a year ago and caught me completely by surprise, so it was that much harder to take, because I didn't see it coming.
But hey, it's only been a year....maybe in another year I'll have built up associations with other people (like you) and will be able to listen to the band with fresh ears. I hope so, because they're excellent. I love Karin Burquist's voice, and Linford Detweiler is an amazing lyricist. I doubt I'll be able to listen to "Long Lost Brother" or "Etc, Whatever", but maybe the rest of their catalogue will be listenable again. *crosses fingers*

"Brahm's Lullaby" was ruined for me when I saw the "school for the blind burns down and kills Mary's baby and Mrs. Garvey" episode of Little House On The Praire. Now whenever I hear that song, all I can think about is an unresponsive Mary humming it.

You haven't lived until they haul out the karaoke machine at your office Christmas party and someone decides to bestow this upon the crowd.

I loved This Love by Maroon 5 the first time I heard it on the radio. The love stopped when I heard it a million more times and learned about the band, specifically about their asshat of a lead singer.

The Nails- 88 Lines About 44 Women was used in a car commercial a few years ago. While it was nice to hear the song again, since you almost never ever ever hear it, but not in a car commercial!? As someone else said, our youth has been co-op'ed. GAH!
