I was really cheering for Roger at the start, but as the match went on, I knew I would be heartbroken for whoever lost. It was so amazing, it is kind of sad anyone had to lose.
Yeah, I know that the winner/loser dynamic is what makes it exciting, but they both played in a way that made it hard to cheer against either of them!

While I totally respect Federer and his amazing talent and skills, I didn't really feel all that bad for him when he lost. I was really hoping Rafa would win, mainly because I get sick of the same person winning over and over again (which is why I never really liked Pete Sampras either. But, I was an Agassi girl from day 1 too!). It's nice to see someone come in and win where others haven't been able to. Federer has been number one in the world for something ungodly like 230 weeks. *yawn* Boring. It just gets old to me.
I'm not totally heartless though, and did feel a little for him after the match, but I know I would have felt a lot worse had Rafa not won.

I really can't feel bad or sad for a 12 time GS champ. I felt from the very beginning that this was Rafa's to lose and it would have been awful for him to not have won it in the end.

What a brutal match - I was amazed that the 2 of them could walk off the court after that.
I would have felt worse for Rafa if he'd lost - he'd missed out the last few yrs and blew 2 match points in the 4th set whereas Roger has won the trophy 5 times now. It's always nice to see a fresh face win.

I was happy for Rafa too.
I do want Federer to beat Sampras's record though. I hate Sampras.

I was a fan of Sampras' more than Agassi but since Pete has been retired, I finally understood why so many disliked him. He truly is a Dawson. The only thing that's missing is a video camera and Joshua Jackson.
I might be perverse but I don't want Fed to win the US Open this year. I just want to see the media overreaction that will happen if he goes winless in the Slams. He'll probably go 3-1 in 2009. It could happen. There are far more hardcourt specialists than grass.

I was a fan of Sampras', too, but I haven't been following him lately. Who's a Dawson Leary, and what does he have in common with Pete?
I'm glad that Venus won the women's title. I have such a strange, irrational affection for her that I end up rooting for her even back in the day when she would play my favorite players.

Dawson Leary was the main character on Dawson's Creek and was a bit of a whiny, self-righteous, egotistical goody-two-shoes. I'm assuming that's what Pete is being accused of here. And you'll get no objections from me! I've been crushing on Andre Agassi since I was 7 and my dad had a poster of him up in his office, all long-haired and wild-eyed. (Dad's a tennis coach, incidentally; it wasn't like a Tiger Beat thing!)
As much as I loved Andre and despised Pete, you always knew that it was going to be special when they played each other. It's nice to have that sort of rivalry again with Federer and Rafa. Except I genuinely like them both, so it makes it a little harder to root for one over the other. But as my mom said that other day during the Wimbledon final, "Nadal's cuter so I'll pull for him."

Heh, thanks. I've been crazy about Pete since I first saw him play (seriously, that serve), and I can't disagree with that assessment. In fact, it might be part of why I love him so much.
I do miss the Agassi-Sampras rivalry. Rafa-Fed is great, but it's almost guaranteed that they'll meet up in the final. Agassi-Sampras was always such a special treat when it happened. I remember staying up until 5 am for that one AO match (2000 QF, I think?) that Agassi won in 5 sets. I couldn't tear my eyes away from the screen.
