Thanks Witchie!
That was pretty mediocre. Maybe it'll gain some momentum now that we've had the pat exposition episode.

I just caught up on this series - it's not great by any stretch of the imagination but, despite the fact that it deals with murder mysteries, it makes for enjoyable lighthearted fare. I like all of the major characters and actors so that certainly makes it easier to overlook the writing deficiencies. The culprits are generally pretty obvious and it's not good when a viewer can figure out something very obvious while the characters remain stumped but it's nice to have a mystery/police drama that is less heavy than most. It kind of reminds me of Diagnosis Murder.

I stopped watching 2 episodes into this season. I literally just forgot it was on, and I haven't thought twice about it until I just saw this thread.
I heart Nathan Fillion, but this show is so, sooooo mediocre.

I really like it but the whole "writer solving crimes" thing is just like catnip to me. I actually enjoyed how they've sort of ditched the "OMG, they're TOTAL opposites!" they played up hardcore in the first few episodes. Beckett is being written as much "looser" but in a way that still seems true to her original character. I also dig the other pair of detectives they work with. For some odd reason, I never try to over-analyze the "Whodunnit!?" when I'm watching this (or Bones, the only other crime procedural I watch) the same way I do when reading a thriller - I will say that the solutions do often seem pretty obvious and pat, but it doesn't bother me.
I guess I just like this show's overall tone. It has a somewhat jazzy feel.

ABC has picked it up for a full season! I just watched for the first time last week and enjoyed it. Its light and a good thing to watch just before bed. Tonight's Hallowe'en themed episode looks fun. SPOILER Malcolm Reynolds makes a cameo!! squee!!!!

As much as I love Simon Baker, I think his show sucks and I gave up. This show is a little "murder, he wrote"-ish, but it's a pleasant hour with Nathan Fillion (whom I also love). So, I'm watching. The female lead is impossibly model-beautiful; why, oh, why can't we have a remotely normal-looking woman as a romantic lead/partner ever?? It works for the British.

As much as I love Simon Baker too(see avatar)--his show does suck (why is it so popular???). Castle is what I think The Mentalist is trying for but its missing the mark. I think a lot of that has to do with the actress playing Lisbon. She lacks the charm and yes, I'll be shallow and say it--beauty of Stana Katic. There's no chemistry between those 2 leads. Castle is light and fluffy, but it works and its fun. I got a little teary when he walked out this week and said 'see you in the fall'.

I felt really bad for Beckett. This show has some lovely moments in it - all thanks to the actors. Now if Nathan Fillion would just come and take me away...

I caught a marathon of this on cable and maybe it's Fillion's charm, but it grew on me. He's just so goofy. But I never catch it on ABC, presumably because there's something better...on cable.

Dredging this thread up, because I've just started watching this recently -- I'm currently about halfway through season two -- and I'm really enjoying it. It's nothing too intense, just a fun mystery series with entertaining characters.
Plus, I've realized that Fillian looks a LOT like one of my old college boyfriends. This is not a bad thing, since this particular boyfriend was -- and is -- pretty hot.
