Watching the Janet Jackson documentary on Hulu right now, but it's kind of hard to watch them all making Joe Jackson out to be a saint who just wanted the best for them. It's reminding me of the King Richard documentary a bit, but this is worse because it's the real kids rewriting the story to make him 100% the hero when there's clearly a subtext underneath.

I thought it was strange too. What I felt they were all saying was that had their father not been abusive to them they would have ended up poor/on welfare/ in a gang/in prison.

That's clearly the way they have chosen to rewrite the story, possibly their coping mechanism all the time or it's the story they mutually agreed upon for the purposes of this documentary. But the "if not for being terrified of our father, we might have misbehaved and wound up in a gang/jail/dead" line of thinking seems to leave out a few other possible paths and outcomes.

Also, maybe being in a gang wouldn't have been worse than being a massive pedophile.

Between the lines it seems that they all feel Joe saved them from a fate worse than death, that fate being impoverished. And given what her brother became it’s an insane take. I like Janet and hope she can parent her son in peace but this documentary was not a great look!
