I realized while watching the season finale tonight that I hate this show now, and I hate Alicia.
I don't think I'm going to watch next season.

What a depressing night for TV. Matthew Goode is becoming a hot property. His agents probably want him off the show... and I can't say I blame them at all. The 2 minutes of screen time producers gave him was blasphemous.
As for Alicia and Kalinda-- I was shocked they had a scene together. To me, Archie was warm and giving, and Juliana was just cold. I know I was supposed to like that scene, but I couldn't.
The only thing I liked about this was Matthew Goode being utterly gorgeous and getting more than 5 words, and Wallace Shawn.
I remember when Sunday night used to be my favorite. But Mad Men and The Good Wife have let me down immeasurably this year. Sigh.

Yawn. Was it just me or was there something weird about Alicia and Kalinda's scene together? There was only a shot or two where they were clearly together. The rest of the shots looked like they may have been using body doubles from the back.

The rest of the shots looked like they may have been using body doubles from the back. Yeah, it was weird. There were way too may tight shots of the actresses' faces, which makes it seem like their scene partner was not there. Like...seriously? The whole thing was just too little too late and it's hard to get the warm fuzzies about their relationship when you know that one or both of the actresses basically held her nose to get through an extremely brief scene because they haven't been able to put on their big girl panties and act like professionals for the last three years. I enjoy Diane, Louis Canning and a lot of the supporting players (Eli, Wallace Shawn), but the rest of this just feels kinda dead to me. The show has gone off the rails and the behind-the-camera shenanigans cast a serious shadow.

The rest of the shots looked like they may have been using body doubles from the back. Yep, lots of over the shoulder shots with doubles. I've seen speculation that even the shots of them sitting side by side may have been split screen. They don't actually cross the middle of the screen and even when they clinked glasses it was in Alicia's one-shot with only Kalinda's hand visible so that could've been a double too. Which seriously?! You need to use split screen? What the eff happened they have to go to those lengths for one 3 minute scene? Aside from all that, whether the two were actually in the same room, I found Julianna's acting in that scene to be very bored and disengaged. And even though I don't like the direction the show is going I've always still liked her acting. I feel the opposite way about Archie. I've generally disliked her character and acting the last few seasons but I really liked her in this episode. I'm glad she was able to show some sass again. I like Michael J. Fox but in small doses. I don't want to see him as the second lead. If they partner it also goes against everything Alicia was talking about last episode. How she only wanted to take cases that she wanted. Now she is going to pair with the most amoral lawyer she knows? And that whole Finn Palmer thing was a mess. I don't know why the show didn't lock him down for the next season. I think the last two episodes are going to be the template for next season. 90 percent is going to be Alicia and her case and the rest of the supporting cast will get maybe 2 brief scenes. Not sure how long I'll be able to watch that.

This is wild speculation on my part, but I'm sure the only way TGW got Matthew Goode was by offering him a co-starring role with lots of time off. I think he was a 7/13ths part, which means he's not in every episode, and has a smaller role (like Chris Noth or Alan Cummings). That allowed him to still make movies-- and I'm sure that's where he wants to be-- movies. Plus his wife is having another baby and he wants to live in England. The way his part was (under) written probably made it very easy for him and his agents to say "bye".
I think if the Kings had written a really good role for him, and he could have become a lead of sorts, he might have stayed for the pay check. I know for a while his film career kind of dried up and he was doing a lot of promotional work.... so the steady paycheck was probably really appealing.

Alicia just irritates me now, I feel like she's so smug and self-righteous. The behind-the-scenes stuff really casts a pall on this show - I think because the show itself has been affected by it. Why blow everything up so badly that she can't go back to her firm with Diane and Cary? The whole running for office was a waste and I didn't like it, but at least make it go somewhere instead of exactly where we were last season, with Alicia starting up a new partnership. I like the supporting characters better than Alicia at this point and it looks like their parts may be getting pared down anyway. I'm really disappointed with this whole season.

It has been officially renewed for next season. I hope they plan it to be the last season and they write a tight story line that incorporates the whole cast rather than a dozen subplots that go nowhere.
Also, the idea of Peter running for president to get the vice presidency is ridiculous! How would he ever possibly be considered a viable option for vice president? He is a convicted felon, admitted john and his wife had to resign from a position herself under a cloud of corruption. I don't know much about US politics so maybe I am wrong, but it seemed like in the early seasons they were at least attempting to be somewhat realistic. Peter running a presidential campaign seems like total fantasy. I really hope they drop this idea, I don't think I can take a whole season of that.

I've had more than enough of all of the law firm musical chairs. It is beyond absurd how the same group of lawyers keep splitting up and re-configuring themselves into new firms every 6 months. There is no drama to be mined there anymore, and they aren't really even trying. My feelings about Canning showing up at Alicia's door were, "Who cares?" followed by, "Actually, I kind of care because I don't really like that character and there's no way Michael J Fox is going to become a permanent, full-time cast member, so this is obviously just another temporary partnership."
