Madeline Kahn was great in anything. I loved her in Paper Moon and Blazing saddles. Don't forget "Young Frankenstein"! "AAAAHHHHH, sweet mystery of life, at last I've found yoooouuu..." My favorite MK movie is "What's Up, Doc?" in which she completely stole every scene she's in. Everything about her in that movie was hilarious. Come to think of it, the entire casting of that movie was absolutely inspired.

Bumping, because I didn't want to make a new thread about stand-up comedy specials. With Dave Chappelle's latest special making headlines for being controversial, in poor taste, and plain unfunny, I started to think about some of the better specials I've seen. Recent faves, Ali Wong's Baby Cobra and Hard Knock Wife. Neal Brennan's 3 Mics. Other comics that I enjoy that aren't big names--Dave Atell, Gary Owens, Donnell Rawlings, Sheryl Underwood. Classic stand-up? Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Bernie Mac. I was a fan of Def Comedy Jam, and Comic View. Now I'm obsessed with this show I recently discovered This Is Not Happening. Holy shit. Some of the tales are hit or miss, but all of Joey Diaz's stories are jaw dropping, vulgar, hilarious, and often moving. Dude has LIVED a life. A small sample of his work. Kid Joey vs a nun. Extremely NSFW language. I've been obsessively googling and watching his work for the past few days. I'm sure there's more that I can't think of right now.

Whoopi Goldberg's One Woman Spook Show (I think that was the name) that aired on HBO's Young Comedians series back in the early 1980's was pure genius.
For pure fun, the Pee Wee Herman's Young Comedians special was whacky, weird and fun. With bonus Phil Hartman!!!

A few months back I read an article profiling him and his standup and meant to find it but forgot. Thanks for the reminder! As for other comedians, Gary Gulman is one of my absolute favorite comedians. His No Can Defend comedy album is so funny and one I can listen to over and over. Especially his take on movies (the Wizard of Oz, the Karate Kid - hilarious). He just filmed a comedy special for HBO that focuses on his depression (we saw it live and he's amazingly open, honest, and funny).

Recent faves, Ali Wong's Baby Cobra and Hard Knock Wife. Neal Brennan's 3 Mics. I'll check out Neal Brennan upon your suggestion. I watched Ali Wong's first special and I thought she hit upon some funny and relatable things. Her second special didn't work so well for me. Her delivery was all the same (full blast all the time) and the vulgarity got to be too much. I watched Emily Heller's special "Ice Thickeners" on youtube and I enjoyed it, but she's not a top-notch comedian. She's more like a snarky friend who says funny things sometimes. John Mulaney is the best though. The three specials on Netflix are all gold, and most of his first album ("The Top Part") is available on youtube and is great. After watching several comedy specials in a row, I really appreciated how fully-formed and well-written his bits are.

I'm a huge fan of standup! And I find it to be a soothing balm when current events get to be too much to bear.
Favorites include: Maria Bamford, John Mulaney (!!!), Neal Brennan, Mitch Hedberg (RIP), Aziz (controversial, I know...), Cedric the Entertainer, Amy Schumer, Dana Carvey, Hannah Gadsby, Tig Notaro, Nick Swardson ... My all-time favorite comedy specials are old and hard to find, but I'll list them anyway just in case anyone is up for a hunt: Cats, Cops, and Stuff by Paula Poundstone, You So Crazy by Martin Lawrence, and The Original Kings (Kangs) of Comedy featuring Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughly, Bernie Mac (RIP), and Cedric.

I loved the Paula Poundstone specials that Comedy Central used to show all the time back in the 90s: her bits about Darryl Hannah, Snickers commercials, her cats. She was great at interacting with audiences.
Aziz's latest special was a bunch of nothing as far as I'm concerned. He supposedly addressed his incident, but not really. The whole thing felt like he was just testing the waters and trying to make a comeback, but didn't have a whole lot of material behind it. I'm ok with him making a comeback. I read his book and watched one episode of Masters of None and I *always* thought his take on dating was a bit sleazy, so it's not really a surprise that his real-life dating life turned out to also be sleazy.
Hannah Gadsby....her special was interesting. It didn't really qualify as a comedy special, but she acknowledges that. She's kind of in a category of his own.
Amy Schumer - generally I can't stand her, but her latest special was tolerable. I didn't turn it off 10 minutes in like I did her previous specials.

Paula Poundstone - I still die laughing at the notion of pretending to be asleep if I ever get pulled over. Aziz's earlier albums were so great. He's still coasting on their success for me (since the CDs live in my car and are on heavy rotation), but you're right, this last one on Netflix ... you can tell he's feeling sorry for himself, which is not a good look at all.

Thanks for all the recs. I needed some fresh material. I loved Mitch Hedberg too. I loved his delivery, it was so different from everything else. R.I.P. indeed. Other deceased comedians that I loved--Patrice Oneal. I listen to his "It's cold out here" story and laugh until I cry every.single.time. Greg Giraldo. Sam Kinison (who I was way too young to watch/listen to). Robert Schimmel. Robin Harris.
I recently remembered Hollywood Shuffle (an amazing classic movie, seriously go watch it!) and it made me remember Robert Townsend's comedy specials. I had forgotten about them and have been obsessively finding clips for days. Sinbad was hilarious, and clean, so I always watched him with my mom. I remember repeatedly watching Janeane Garofalo specials repeatedly back in the day. I was convinced she was the voice of Daria for years. One of Margeret Cho's early specials was hilarious as well. I still randomly think of "Ass Master" in her mom's broken English from time to time.
Random favorites--Early Russell Peters, old Dennis Miller(sniff), young Chris Tucker, Bruce Bruce, Lavell Crawford, and Deon Cole.
