Since Magnolia oscillates between my favourite and second-favourite film of all time, I must third huntergrayson's and LittleEdieBeale's nomination of Aimee Mann's "Wise Up" singalong.
Still on the PT Anderson tip, the opening sequence of Boogie Nights, with the Scorcese-inspired (read: stolen and acknowledged as such), deliriously loooong takes and utterly banal-funny dialog ("Did you call that girl today? If you don't do it today, it'll be the weekend and you'll never see her"), all set to "The Best of My Love", makes it impossible to not watch the rest of the movie.
Like the hilariously, pants-wettingly funny exchange between Wahlberg and Reilly when they first meet ("What do you squat? Hey, you ever seen that film, 'Star Wars'? People tell me I look like Han Solo"), set to Three Dog Night's "Mama Told Me Not to Come". And the Porno Rocks! montage, with it's DePalma-splitscreen homage, set to The Commodore's "Machine Gun" and ending in a group dance-along? And who can listen to "Sister Christian" (which actually wasn't realeased until 2 years after the movie is supposed to take place) again without wanting to light off firecrackers? Y'know, I think I know what I'm gonna watch this afternoon.

Re: Donnie Darko (and I don't like the director's cut either! My people!)--yes, originally "MLK" was supposed to go over the montage at the end but they couldn't afford the rights. Same thing happened in the Halloween party scene where "Just Like Heaven" was going to be used instead of "Love Will Tear Us Apart".

I have to say I thought the song "Bittersweet Symphony" worked perfectly with the end of Cruel Intentions. Maybe it doesn't classify as a "best movie moment", but I liked it.

Given the tragic news of Young Frankenstein star Peter Boyle's death, I had to bump it up by mentioning his and Gene Wilder's version of "Puttin On the Ritz," which is hilarious.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the beginning sequence from A Hard Day's Night where John, George and Ringo are being chased through the streets into the train station by their fans where Paul (in disguise) and his grandfather are reading the papers on a bench and are eventually chased onto a train to the music of the title song. That scene brings a smile to my face.
Also, the scene where they're playing in the field to "Can't Buy Me Love" was a fun sequence as well.

A few standouts for me:
Olive dancing to Rick James' Superfreak in Little Miss Sunshine had me in hysterics.
The tattoo sequence in Hedwig And The Angry Inch with the Origin Of Love playing killed me. So so beautiful.
And word to all those who mentioned David Lynch. Nobody sets a mood like him.
Don't know if there's a thread like this in the tv forum, but I have to mention the use of Sia's Breathe Me in the final episode of Six Feet Under. Might be my favourite use of music on screen (big or small) of all time.
I also loved the use of Counting Crow's Colourblind in that film.

Man. It's been over a year since the finale, but If I hear that song (espeically if I'm in a car), my eyes still tear up. Best use of music, ever.

I'm not sure if any of you will agree. But ABBA in Muriel's Wedding. Everytime I hear WATERLOO I think of that movie.

Oh totally, Barrie. The movie was pretty much my introduction to ABBA, and made it SO much fun for me to get into! The white jumpsuits and the lipsynching from Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths were just fabulous.

All the great oldies in Now and Then will forever define my idea of childhood in the sixties, since I wasn't there myself: Sugar, Sugar, Knock Three Times, Hitchin' a Ride...I can't hear them without being reminded of that movie.
Agree with the Lord of the Rings scores, especially The Two Towers; my favorite part is when Aragorn and company first ride up to Rohan, Eowyn is standing looking out at the country and the flag blows away...gorgeous.
For best use of Christmas music, Home Alone. Particularly Carol of the Bells, so perfectly creepy.
And...I have to say it...all the songs in Newsies just get me all pumped up. I used to rewind the King of New York scene and watch it over and over when I was um...younger...and I can still sing all the words.
