"New York, New York"--I always thought they were just repeating the "New York" to balance out the notes in the song. It was only a couple of years ago that I realized it meant New York city, New York state. Go ahead and laugh, I don't care.

Count me in with those just getting the 'New York, New York' thing.
It took about ten years of watching Willow for me to understand that Willow created the double-headed dragon thingy when he zapped a troll with a wand.

You know the scene in Gone with the Wind where Rhett and Scarlett are on their honeymoon and he takes her to a fancy restaurant. She's finishing her dinner and is, in a very uncouth way, scraping up every crumb from her plate -- hell, she's practically licking it clean. Rhett just chuckles indulgently and says they can always order more if they want it. Anyhow, I was always puzzled about why they would have our heroine looking like, well, a pig.
Then, after all these years I remembered the famous line: "As God is my witness, I'll never go hungry again!"
Duh! Clearly the woman's got food issues which she dramatically announced against the blazing sun-set. And yet I never got why she was shovelling food into her mouth so unbecomingly.
Oh, I thought of another one (not a movie, though). You know the "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" song? Well, I've always lived in and around Boston, so of course we always sang, "We'll root, root, root for the Red Sox, if they don't win it's a shame." It took me years to realize that, depending on where you live, you're supposed to insert the name of your home team. I was a grown adult before I realized that this song was not written specifically for and about the Red Sox.
(What is it about this thread that inspires me to flaunt my ignorance...?)

I just realized that the bird name Tweety Pie is a play on the expression Sweety Pie. Der.

The first time I saw Love, Actually I was confused at the part when what's-his-face his holding up the cards for Keira Knightley. The first one said "Tell him it's Carol Singers." And I thought to myself, "Who is Carol Singers? Is that some friend of theirs or something?"
Then I realized that it was Christmas, and so people would be singing carols....der!

I was recently rewatching Stand By Me for the 1,000th time, and I just realized that when the boys are talking about Annette Funiccello boobs on the Mickey Mouse Club, and Gordie says, "I've been noticing lately that the A and the E are starting to bend around the sides," he's talking about the name on her shirt. "Annette" starts w/ A and ends w E, so when her boobs grow, the letters will bow out. Duh. All this time I thought the boys had some misconceptions about bra cup sizes.
Also, this isn't movie related, but I just realized that the band Eve 6 is named after a character in an old X-Files episode. The one w/ all of the cloned Adams and Eves, and Eve 6 is the one who's tied up in solitary in the asylum who can't stand the overhead lights. I've always wondered where they got their band name.

D'oh! Never knew that.
Not really movie related, but I just gave my friend an "I SO Just Got That!" moment when I was lamenting the loss of "Arrested Development" and was citing its brilliance: My favorite was the two restaurants they mention, "Skip Church's," where someone (can't remember who) goes on Sundays, and "Miss Temple's," where Barry Zuckercorn goes on Fridays. My friend was like, "Wait, how is that fun--OH!" Oh, and don't order the Skip's Scramble.
