I think Eminem has more variety in his song topics than most mainstream rappers. He's done political songs (Mosh), songs about his daughter (Mockingbird), songs about beefs (Like Toy Soliders), songs about his wife (Love the Way You Lie), songs about the controversy around him (Without Me), silly songs (Slim Shady), songs about his fucked up childhood (Cleaning Out My Closet). That is more variety than the usual bitches, hos and street cred crap that most rappers sing about. That is actually more variety than most popstars.

I have to disagree with that. He isn't special because he supposedly hasn't used those words. He's used those words to refer to his mother and Kim. Just because he didn't refer to women he doesn't know like that doesn't make him unique.
He's the whiner to me. He whines about his childhood intertwined with his mom, Kim or his mother as horrible whores, etc, or of course his recovery as that article went to great detail to describe. Without Me and Slim Shady are the same shit different toilet IMO because they both talk about how oh so controversial he is, and are his silly first singles off his albums. Those same silly songs are where he starts his "beefs" with popstars and people who any Hip Hop head would laugh at if say Rakim and KRS-One were to go after. Mosh is probably the only song that is out of his usual topics.
Not to mention he's a punk ass bitch. He writes songs about killing Kim and having Hailey witness it or in the car while he dumps her body, yet Kim makes some comments about him in a radio interview and he sends his lawyers on her because Hailey shouldn't be hearing those things. ;D He's just plain whack IMO, but unfortunately he is the highest selling rapper out there and what people think of as the shining beacon of Hip Hop. Then again, what's to expect this is an industry where Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj are popular along with him and the latter two being thought of as the "future of hip hop". There's a reason why there's people out there proclaiming that Hip Hop is dead when that bullshit is what's "in". SMH

Love the Way You Lie? I cannot stand that song, probably because it's supposed to be Hip Hop, yet it's a straight pop song all the way through including the soft guitar. SMH I can't stand this song either because I think Rihanna's voice is like nails on a chalkboard. I can't even get through the opening line of the song without having to change it. I like Em's part well enough (especially, 'look me in the eyeball' because it makes me laugh) but she ruins it for me.

Love the Way You Lie? I cannot stand that song, probably because it's supposed to be Hip Hop, yet it's a straight pop song all the way through including the soft guitar. SMH I don't see why this should matter. There are tons of artists who mix genres, even artists who are specifically known for a certain type of music. Hip hop and pop especially seem to be mixed together all the time. I mean yes, the song is labeled as hip hop because Eminem is known primarily as a hip hop artist, but why should his songs have to fit neatly under that particular label in order for an audience to find it enjoyable?

That article was incredibly cynical and completely brushed off the fact that Eminem is an addict. Most of Eminem's lyrics are the blah, blah, blah bullshit of an addict and the majority of the rest is the sort of emotional diarrhea therapists get to listen to all day. So what? If you don't like it, don't listen to it.
Why should it matter what non-HipHop fans think? If Eminem or Drake or Nicki Minaj have pop hits it's not like it's anyone's fault that they have catchy songs that appeal to a wider audience.

I like the catchiness of his songs, but I do think his actual rapping voice can be somewhat hard on the ears. I've wondered why he sounds the way he does.

Well it does matter when said people proclaim someone to be the best or so good at something that they know nothing about. To me it doesn't make any sense at all. If you like him and his music, I don't care, but when someone comes out with I don't listen to rap, but he's the best I've ever heard, etc it's like wtf? It's like someone saying Oasis is the best band ever and have never even heard of the Beatles much less their music. It matters because people that don't know about Hip Hop are hoisting these people up and proclaiming them as fab left and right. People say that the music industry sucks real hard now, I agree. Unfortunately Hip Hop is one of the worst off because of it. I think I've said my bit so maybe I should walk on out of this thread because he is evidently liked as a rapper here.
