I completely agree with you, kostgard. I think the fan reception to seasons 1-6 versus 7 and 8 demonstrates that even if they couldn't have an ending everyone was happy with, they could have GOTTEN there in a way a lot more people were happy with. Of course it is very fitting that after ending the show on a 'white men fall upward' note, D&D will now get to help create the spinoff show for HBO...like, of course that's what they wrote (and I bet it's loosely what GRRM has in mind too).

I also think another thing that really bothers me is that they skipped right through some important scenes, like Sansa and Arya finding out about Jon's heritage, or the discovery of Dany's body (did Jon confess right away? Was Greyworm tempted to kill Jon right away? If so, who stopped him?), but instead we get long scenes of Tyrion walking around or giving speeches, or Jon and Dany riding around on the dragons. As a result, many of the conclusions, like Dany's death, seemed rushed and without much impact.

Yeah I really wanted to know who found Jon and Dany and why he wasn't killed on the spot (I know, he's protected by plot armor). That could have been a pretty awesome scene.
I knew what would happen this episode so I had some time to make peace with it ;-) I don't hate every ending but as it's been said before, too much in too little time to feel truly satisfying. Bran becoming king when he simply doesn't care about anything has the same ring to it as Dan Humprey being revealed as Gossip Girl. The one fate I truly hated because it was so annoying was Bron's; that was the spoiler I really hoped to be false lol! But the writers love that character so...
I know many people celebrate the role of the women and the power some of them got in the end. But a season that had no female writers or directors is not a show I can take seriously in this day and age when it comes to good writing about female characters.
I did like the final shot of that Castle Black gate closing because the show began with a shot of that same gate.

Not at all satisfying- but hey it's over. And the end does not cancel out the early seasons which were some of the best television storytelling ever. But GoT is always going to seem like that really promising student. That kid who always got straight A's their whole scholastic career. Always turned in top notch work and made their teachers and principals proud. Then senior year, they go bug wild and barely finish their homework. Everything they hand in is a D or a C- at best. They still earn their diploma, but it's beyond obvious no further f*cks were given by them in that last year.
I did love Drogon melting they Iron Throne. That was a lovely bit of poetry. Grey Worm sailing off to Missandei's homeland was also sweet. And Ghost getting cuddles was necessary. But everything else was so "meh".
Jon meets Tormund at the "wall" and Tormund never even speaks a word or changes his expression? Damn, Brienne broke that man completely. Stupid Jamie's page gets filled out by Brienne and she doesn't even start a page for herself? You fought a bear, my good lady! Love yourself more!!
I don't think Bran made the best sense to become king. So he knows everything? Oh, and Jon Snow knows nothing? Is that it? Dany was going to "break the wheel" so they needed Bran the Broken...? I'm trying to make it all work somehow and it just doesn't. The biggest take away is he's Bran the BORING... and not the first of his name either! There was Bran the Builder and one of Ned's brothers or cousins or uncles was a Bran. He's not the first of his name, he's just the least interesting of his name. But we won't have to watch him rule, so that is good at least.
C- ending to an A+ show overall. But not the worst bit of television I've ever watched.

And that's it. No other women had any contribution to the rebuilding or shaping of the world. And of course, there's no one person of color. Did all the Dothroki leave too? If they stayed, shouldn't one of them be sitting at that table too? Nope. They left. Jon passed them as they were heading towards a ship. And Grey Worm knows nonsense when he sees it and fucked off to the beach, taking all of the Unsullied with him. It's just Brienne in that white sausage factory. And again - I hope she kills at least half of them and goes back to Sansa's service. Someone on Alt Shift X's live feed pointed out that if Bran kicks it, Sansa is next in line. Maybe that should have been the twist - she planted Brienne in the south so she could kill Bran and Sansa takes it all. But she's not next in line. The whole point of that scene was that they did end up breaking the wheel, in a manner of speaking, because the king would not be chosen by birth but by the council made up by the heads of all the kingdoms (which Sansa isn't part of anymore). I didn't hate the episode, in fact, right up through the point where Drogo flies off with Dany's body, I thought it was fantastic. And from that point on, it felt like " eh, let's just get this shit over with!" To much that didn't make sense just to wrap it up. -Was I the only one surprised the GreyWorm didn't kill Jon after realizing that Dany had been killed? -Why wouldn't Tyrion mention that Jon the actual heir to the throne? Not, that I wanted him to be king, but that should at least been brought up. And there was also the fact that Jon was willing to die save everyone from Dany's tyranny - that alone made him a better candidate than Bran in my book. - And I'm glad that Sansa and the north are a free kingdom. But not one of the other six kingdom said, "Hey we'd like to be free too?" - Why banish Jon to the Nightwatch when there was no nightwatch left? - If they were all just going to punish Jon why did they all bother to show up and get him back? I feel like even just one more episode would have done the story line so much more justice.

It's interesting that critics seemed to be divided along gender lines.

I cried when Drogon was so upset over his Mom's death. That just killed me. I cried too when the Starks said goodbye, Brienne wrote down Jamie's deeds and hesitated over how to write the end, and when Ghost got his lovies.

It seems as though the one criticism that almost everyone agreed on was that the pacing was way too fast and that seasons seven and eight should have been regular-sized.

Something just occurred to me. I was watching this video about the dip in the quality of the writing, and they showed a clip of Tywin and Jaime from season 4. Tywin melted down Ice and forged 2 new swords. Brienne has one, and Jaime the other. So where is Jaime's sword now? I'm assuming that the Unsullied took possession of it when he was captured, but do they know the significance of a Valarian steel sword? I'm sure with Sansa would want that piece of her family's history back. It's only fitting that it would go back to the North now that it is independent. Did some random soldier keep it? Did someone give it back to Tyrion? I know it's mostly irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, and a throw away detail, but I can't help be feel like no one was looking at the scripts with as much precision as they used to. I know it was already in the books for Arya to get Needle back, so we saw that played out, but this sword symbolized so much more to the story. I hope do why this struck me over some of the other dropped story threads, but it did. And of course there's the coffee cup, the water bottles, and other sloppy mistakes. Sigh. I'm just going to continue to laugh at the memes, and reminisce about the first 4 seasons.
