He was hilarious in 21 Jump Street. I was not expecting to laugh that much at that movie. He really stole the show.

Change it to "Sexiest Thumb Alive" and he's got my vote. *sadly pages through carefully preserved copy of SMA issue from 1988*

But it used to be only major stars - established leading men that women of all ages would agree were sexy: Mel Gibson, Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise v.1.0, Sean Connery, Patrick Swayze. I can guarantee my mother has no idea who Channing Tatum is. My sister might not even know who he is and she reads US Weekly religiously. He's more like the winner of a Tiger Beat reader's poll.

Agreed. I like Channing Tatum just fine, he's certainly attractive enough and he's been good in what I've seen him in. But my mom had no idea who he was until I said "the guy in The Vow." And Bradley Cooper last year? She still has no idea who he is. I think the problem is that there really aren't any established leading men that all ages find attractive, because there really aren't any huge heavy hitter leading men anymore.

That's really interesting. And I think that rule also applies to women. Who's "America's Sweetheart" right now? I'm probably missing something since I'm not into that genre, but I feel like there really hasn't been much going on with romantic comedies lately. And it feels like the more recent Blockbuster action flicks have been all about ensemble casts (MI:4, Avengers, X-Men, Batman, etc). Interesting. I wonder if we're moving away from big Hollywood stars (do studios want to pay for them if they don't rake in cash like they used to?) and more towards groups of actors who don't open films per se, but are have other strengths (they're solid actors who turn in good to great performances).

Yeah, nobody at the moment, which means there's one less person on the planet for me to hate on. I think Sandra Bullock is an awesome person, but even she got on my nerves due to her "sweetheart" title.

I really think that Channing Tatum is more well-known than people realize. Or maybe it's just a regional thing since I live in the south and he's from Alabama, but I was hearing about him way before Magic Mike from people who do not frequent online gossip sites or anything like that, and at the time I hadn't seen any of his movies. And this was from women aged 18-50, all going batshit over him. I think it could have been that Nicholas Sparks movie that did it, because I know a lot of people who love those crappy books.

I just looked at the People website and was ehhh? or eww! through most of the last 24 years, although most of the places I agreed were in the margins, like in the sexiest athlete/musician/scientist parts.
Channing Tatum? I didn't know who he was for a long time, and I never read his thread. I assumed he was a female actress on some show I didn't watch. I think he'll age well.

I don't find him sexy at all but then again, I've also never been able to see Brad Pitt's appeal ;-) I can see though why he'd be People's choice after all his recent success. Also, who else would there be?

I was totally on board with - at the time they were chosen - JFK Jr (1988), Brad Pitt (1994) and George Clooney (1997). But even people who never did anything for me personally, such as Pierce Brosnan, I could recognize they were international sex symbols.
Speaking of Bond, Daniel Craig would have been a much better choice. Much better. The whole damn country went to see Skyfall last week and left panting. He's got the body, he's got the talent. He's a real leading man, not just a kid with potential. The problem is People requires the Sexiest Man and his publicist to participate, and I'm sure Craig wouldn't.
