I maintain Downey should have WON an Oscar for Chaplin in 1992 instead of Pacino (who should have won in 1975 for Godfather Part 2 but lost to Art Carney.) YMMV, of course.

Gwyneth Paltrow is a good actress. For the most part. I have enjoyed a lot of her performances. And even when I wasn't quite convinced, she was still at least competent.
Brad Pitt is an interesting actor when he doesn't go for "classical leading man" roles. And it seems to me that he's mostly aware of his strengths and limitations, but feels it necessary to go for the "hero" role from time to time to "justify" his A-list status. He's really best when he plays goofy or deranged, though.
Kate Winslet would be an even better actress if she didn't have this tendency, at least as I see it, to look for "likable" traits in all her characters.
I wasn't impressed with Blanchett's work in Aviator. I think she was brilliant in I'm Not There, though.

He definitely should've won that year. He was brilliant in that movie, I still think it's the best work he's ever done.
Agreed, I've long maintained that he's a character actor in a leading man's body. He was brilliant in Kalifornia and 12 Monkeys.

Brad's also great in Snatch (plus, he's hot in that movie too... Also, hos voice-work in Megamind (and the fact that the role of Metro Man really pokes serious fun at his heart-throb/hero status) makes me think he doesn't take himself very seriously at all.

I felt the same way. WWI - 5 million killed, hundred of thousands left badly injured, families bereaved all over the world and I'm supposed to care about a horse? Really?

Quite correct. If you listen to his commentaries for "Se7en" and "Fight Club" you find a refreshingly intelligent performer who takes his work very seriously but his celebrity decidedly nonseriously.

I hate all of John Hughes' teen movies (Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, etc.). I know that lots of folks hold them up as iconic representations of the teenage experience, but they leave me profoundly unimpressed -- and it's not because I don't "get" the 80s adolescent; I'm the same age as Molly Ringwald and was a teenager myself when those movies came out.

I have nothing for respect for Brad Pitt. He's a terrific actor and brilliant at comedy. The fact that he's also handsome as fuck is a plus.

I do agree with everything you said, but with this in particular. I thought this tendency of hers was awful in Revolutionary Road (haven't seen The Reader, though based on the book I don't think it would work for that role either).
