I finally watched it and I'll admit it- I thought The Hobbit was dull. There were a few scenes that were fun (yes, the rabbit chase wasn't in the book but it was at least amusing) but for the most part it dragged. And the goblin stuff felt like a rerun of FOTR in Moria, only it was cool then. And yes, Richard Armitage is hot, but not enough to make up for the dullness. The LOTR nostalgia was powerful enough that I didn't totally hate the Hobbit, but the "plot" was effing ridiculous. Walk over here, fight some monsters. Walk over there, fight some monsters. Climb a mountain, fight some monsters. Lather, rinse, repeat. I almost burst out laughing at the end when the giant horizon stretched out, and it was like, "OH BOY!! Two more WHOLE MOVIES of walking and monsters!!!" In fairness, I also really hate the book (despite enjoying the LOTR books). See I loved The Hobbit book, and the LOTR books--so I may not be the best judge on this. But for me, I thought the reason why I wasn't a HUGE fan of the movie when I saw it in the theater was because I watched it on the Saturday after I'd been up super late the night before doing a server install. So I was tired, it was a long movie, and the 3D effects sort of distracted me. But then I tried to watch it again, at home, well rested--no 3D and I fell asleep. I don't think it was a bad movie, I actually enjoyed a lot of it, I just felt like a lot of it could have trimmed. For me the whole bit where Thorin Oakenshield is off staring into the distance, manly and broody (and as hot as I find Richard Armitage and his voice) while his backstory is being told behind him, in his earshot, was ridiculous.

And I hate his tiny Hello Kitty mouth I can't help myself, I do love John Cusack (another big fan of "Grosse Pointe Blank" here), but, oh my God, you're right, he DOES have a creepy, tiny, Hello Kitty mouth. I could never put my finger on what bothered me about his mouth, and that's it exactly. Also, agreed that he was a creepy stalker in "Say Anything." Re: "The Notebook," my unpopular opinion is it wasn't very romantic. RM's character struck me as a spoiled brat, and she was kind of abusive. I lost count of how many times she slapped Noah -- if the guy smacked her like that, it would have been an entirely different movie, but she can slap the hell out of him and it's somehow still romantic. ETA: Just realized I'm responding to posts from the first page of this thread, from years ago. Oops. The new boards sometimes direct me back to the first page and I don't realize it. D'oh. I'm not deleting this, though, because I am guessing chonies will get a notification that I quoted her and then wonder what the hell is going on when the post is missing.

Ultimately, that's my complaint too. I actually didn't hate the movie as much as my post made it sound like But yes, they are so obviously trying to pad it out to three movies in some parts that it almost just made me throw my hands up and laugh.

And when I saw this, I thought "who was I bitching about, again?" Poor John Cusack. Unloved by me.

I do love Grosse Pointe Blank. I think it's hilarious with a kick-ass soundtrack.

Grosse Pointe Blanke is an awesome movie. Still love it. It's just I haven't enjoyed anything he's done since then. In addition he's been revealed as humorless jackass (how could he not love Better Off Dead?) and that just makes me unhappy.

Shan, don't feel bad -- I liked someone's comment on the previous screen before realizing that it was two-plus years old. I must say that I love Runaway Jury -- is that early or late John Cusack? It's one of those movies that, if I turn the TV on and it's playing, I'll sit and watch the whole damn thing.

Must Love Dogs is one of my favorite movies, which is unusual for me because I can't stand John Cusack or romantic comedies. So I'm going to have to credit Diane Lane for that anomaly.

I don't know where this falls on the Unpopularity scale, but I don't care for Woody Allen films, utterly separate from his personal life. I don't know if I've seen enough Woody Allen to fully appreciate him, because I always find myself bored by his movies. He's like a genre you know was influential and you have to slog through in order to seem like a literate person, but really just think about all the time wasted.

I've seen some of his earlier pre-Soon Yi stuff, and was not really impressed. Annie Hall was okay I suppose but I'm not sure why it won so many awards.
