I think my sister is about your age--she had a stuffed ET that she carried around. My mom and other sister put a big ET puzzle together and then used Mod Podge to seal it, so it hung in 3rd Sister's room for a while. The movie was kind of creepy, and ET looked like a big booger.
About unpopular opinions generally, I'm pretty comfortable with the gaps in my pop culture checklists, and I expect everyone else is comfortable with theirs. I do get irritated when film and media majors say they love movies but have never seen anything with subtitles (and don't want to), or fringier but still really accessible stuff like Freaks or Cat People, or really anything that isn't cineplex-only fare. But I'm an easily-exasperated jerk. If someone isn't a film major and doesn't want to watch whatever, cool. I'm a librarian who hasn't read Harry Potter, so that's where I am.

OT- I'm not sure why I didn't know this before, but you're a librarian?! Dream job!

I've also never seen "The Sound of Music." Or "Schindler's List" and only one of the Indiana Jones movies (I think it was the second one). But I do love "ET" and I think "Jaws" is a pretty perfect movie.
Oh, and circling back to the Kevin Costner convo, I don't really like him and that's definitely shaped my movie-viewing. It was out for years before I saw "Field of Dreams" and I was totally unimpressed.

Speaking of Costner, I remember when The Bodyguard came out and everyone was losing their minds over it, how good it was etc. I didn't see it until a couple years later and I could not believe the lack of chemistry between Costner and Whitney. I didn't buy the romance angle at ALL, and their kiss by the plane at the end was just embarrassing to watch. It's not like I hated the movie, but to me, the lack of chemistry was palpable.

I'm a librarian who hasn't read Harry Potter, so that's where I am. I'm also a librarian who's never read Harry Potter. I know enough about the books to BS my way through basic conversations about it though, because I have a friend who loves the books and would expound on them at great length. I'm also someone who's comfortable with my pop culture gaps. I've never seen Casablanca, and I don't intend to. In general the movies of that era don't appeal to me. I find the dialogue stiff, delivered in an overly-mannered fashion (in American movies anyway.) Because of this I find the likes of Katherine Hepburn to be wildly overrated. If this makes me a philistine, then so be it.

I don't like Katharine Hepburn's acting either but her life story is fascinating. Casablanca is boring as hell - one of those movies I've seen way too many times for who knows what reasons. Also The African Queen - hate it.
My very unpopular movie opinion, or maybe position is a better word, is I have no interest in seeing the new Wonder Woman movie. I'm a die-hard Lynda Carter, early '80s TV show fan. It is a very unreasonable position as the character, of course, pre-dates Lynda Carter. But I loved her and spent hours twirling around my backyard trying to change into WW in a flash of light. Alas...

Oh man, Casablanca sucks!!
I do have some movies I can recommend from that time though- Bringing up Baby is awesome. And It happened one night.
Just take off any feminism hats while watching. ;-)

The Mummy remake wasn't that terrible, but still a one and done movie.

I finally saw The Big Sick on Netflix and found it over rated. The acting wasn't very good IMO. I will now acquire a new identity and go into movie critic protection.

Gone with the Wind was awful. Also how anyone sees Breakfast at Tiffany's as a classic with that racist portrayal of her neighbor is beyond me.
