I came to accept ceremony then party dresses when I realized that the practice allows more designers to have their moment in the spotlight for awards nights. It doesn't equate to more designers. Both of Jessica's dresses were Gucci. It's all the same elite designers - LV, Chanel, Dior, etc - getting two dresses for the price of one from whichever actress is currently on their payroll, or whichever actress they landed for the night through cut-throat negotiations and bribery. The commercialism and deal-making is all so crass. Almost every year it results in a lot of ugly fights over whose stylist made a shady deal, which actress reneged on a commitment to wear a certain gown, which designer made a dress that wasn't unique enough. And I can't tell you how much less I respect the actresses who get to the ceremony three hours early so they can do 50 poses for every single last photographer. I miss some of the pre-1990s spirit of someone just going out and buying a nice dress appropriate for a formal event, and then walking at a normal pace from their car into the theater.

Even when it's the same designer, its them getting to show multiple looks. And yes, many of them are major designers, but there are still some people out there who wear and highlight smaller designers. Christian Siriano became a big deal past Project Runway due in large part to his opportunities in designing for red carpets.

I’m just glad Jessica finally has her Oscar, regardless of what dress she wore.
If anyone has seen The Eyes of Tammy Faye, how’s her singing voice?
She’s supposed to be in the George Jones/Tammy Wynette biopic if it’s still on.

Nice! That makes me excited for the Tammy Wynette biopic!

I have to admit that I have been uninterested in the biopic because, in character, Jessica does not sport the gigantic, caked-on mascara spider lashes that were Tammy Faye's most defining feature. In all the pics I've seen, she's wearing heavy makeup but the mascara is nowhere in the realm of what the real Tammy Faye wore. I figure if they can't get the most obvious detail right, how good is the rest?
I'm willing to be wrong, though. If it comes to one of the streaming services I get, maybe I'll watch it.

I didn't hate her first ceremony dress, upon looking again at it I liked it better. The green dress though is really pretty.

Ah, the pre-stylist era. Good times. Celebrities didn't look air brushed the way they do today. I kind of miss that too.

I finished watching the movie today. It's very superficial. I never saw the 2000 documentary it's based on, but I would bet that the documentary is much better. Also, the thrust of the documentary (Tammy was ahead of her time and is a gay icon) was a new take back in 2000, and now it feels very dated.
Frankly, the innerworkings of the PTL, the politics of the televangelism world in the 80s and 90s, the details of Jim Bakker's fraud, Bakker's promotion of the theology of prosperity and subsequent rejection of it - it all sounds a lot more interesting than what I watched. I guess I would have preferred to see a good movie about Jim Bakker.

Yeah, I didn't love the movie either. On the one hand, it portrayed Tammy as shrewd enough to demand a seat at the table with the guys and to manage Jim into prominence, yet on the other made her out to be a complete innocent when it came to any fraudulent activities. It didn't delve into her inner life at all and what she really thought of what was going on around her. Perhaps that's because no one truly knows. But glossing over so much didn't really help me come to understand or appreciate her/that era.
That being said, I thought Jessica did a great job and deserved her win. Especially compared to Kristen Stewart, who seemed to me to be more of an over the top caricature of Diana than an embodiment. When it comes to portraying a real life character I thought Jessica was better than Nicole Kidman as well and had the harder assignment.
