I'm so excited for this, I'm back to paranoid-mode avoiding spoilery stuff in reviews. I read two today but stopped after about one sentence, both were positive, though.

I'm rewatching the Alien movies at home to bring me up to speed!

Me too! And if anyone is needing to buy them, the anthology is on sale at Amazon for forty bucks. On BluRay even.

Or about $30 on Amazon UK, and those are region-free so they'll work over here too.

I'm barely scratching the surface but I have to commend the Blu-Ray Anthology for including *everything* on previous video/laserdisc/DVD releases. Also, the Mu-Th-Ur mode is one of the coolest things I've ever seen as a special feature.

The anthology has some great stuff, for sure. I would have loved to have heard the entire Henriksen/Biehn/Paxton/Goldstein DVD commentary for Aliens rather than James Cameron drone on and Carrie Henn, God bless her, but she adds nothing.
Topic: I cheated and saw this early. I'd describe it as chilling.

I agree, it was very chilling. My only complaint is that they buried Guy Pearce in awful old man make-up. Couldn't they have gotten an actual old guy for that part and had Guy play one of the crew members? I felt ripped off.

Saw a matinee and liked it. I've only seen Alien, and only once, and I don't remember a lot beyond the whole chest-bursting-running-and-screaming aspect, so I don't really have an opinion on it as a prequel or mythology tie-in, but it was good as a stand-alone monster movie. Kind of standard space-horror subject matter as far as the characters arriving on the mysterious space location and examining the mysterious alien stuff and oh shit people are dying now, but it was atmospheric and the characters were good, especially Michael Fassbender's David. I didn't really feel like the whole "engineer" subplot was as deep and revelatory as they maybe meant it to be, but it added a decent dimension, especially contrasted with David's situation.
>>One thing that really bugged me the whole time was the "oh no, on our super advanced spaceship with medical personnel we have noooo waaaayy to give you an abortion." Yes they would. If there are females on the ship, reproductive health care would be included. (I did get the sense that David just didn't WANT to abort the alien yet, but if that was all it was then "uh no we don't have the technology" would be kind of a transparently stupid lie.) And then the surgery/medical pod is exclusively calibrated for men? Why? There are women on board. I understand that they wanted to dramatically remove the facehugger fetus and all, but there are plenty of ways they could have done that. (And if she'd gotten the "caesarean" like she originally instructed the machine [for a 3 month fetus? Why? Again, no abortion setting?], wouldn't it have been basically the exact same scene? C-sections are fucking gross too.)
I had no idea that was Guy Pearce, but the old-age makeup was pretty ridiculous - he looked like one of the goblins from Harry Potter - and I also do not understand why they didn't just cast an actual old person. They do exist, and it's not like he did any heavy-duty acting.<<

Saw it last night. Pretty intense but not as much outright horror as in the proper Alien movies. In fact, with a couple of cuts, this could have easily have been PG-13. I've got some issues with some aspects with the storyline too, especially with Charlize Theron's character. Incredible visuals though.

Here's a very interesting, but kinda long explanation/theory of the movie. I haven't seen it yet, the mixed reviews are making me nervous. But with this info in mind, it might make it more linear.
