I can't say I didn't enjoy the film--I was riveted--but it was mostly the visuals and the scary bits with the aliens that had me on the edge of my seat. I turned to my friend when the credits rolled and said, "That was so scary! Now can you explain to me what it was about?" She shrugged.
So far, everyone I know who's seen it, that's been their reaction. "I liked it because it was pretty, but I couldn't begin to describe the plot."
It was as though someone took bits and pieces of scenes from old X-Files episodes from, like, completely different seasons, with no through arc, and no context, and strung them together into a movie. There was a vague sense of the attempt at a grander plot and some kind of characterization, but it just absolutely held no water at all. It made NO sense.

hmmmm. I liked it. But I wonder if I liked it so much because I have seen some shitty movies lately and this was much better than shitty.
Do I still have to spoiler? I'll wait to talk about it, if so. I kind of hate spoilering (personal preference)

It was amazing to look at, and Fassbender was terrific, but the plot made less and less sense as it went along, and the "surprise" twists were telegraphed way in advance.
I thought Guy Pearce was the full beard guy who gets attacked by the alien snake thing. Took me a while to figure out that he was the other guy.
Tom Hardy Look Alike looks a lot like Tom Hardy.

I was so excited to see this, and had gotten wind of some of the nerd rage before I went in, but ultimately I really liked it. I completely get all the criticism regarding the plot (and I find it amusing that Lindelof is getting more post-Lost heat for this).
The visuals are gorgeous, I might see it again just for that. Ridley was right to stay away from all the prequel talk, there is no way you can match the impact of the original Alien. It was a first, and at this point in time there is no way I can be frightened by the alien again on that level.
Oddly enough, I feel less confused by the plot as time goes on. I guess that is one advantage to leaving questions unanswered and sequel-friendly, your mind can fill in the gaps.

Just saw this last night. I am easily squicked out during the best of times and was pregnant when this first came out so my husband steered me away from it because of the surgery scene. He loves the movie.
I could not get over Guy Pearce's makeup. It was horrible! Why not just get an older actor for the role? Wish they had fleshed out Idris Elba's character a bit more. Oh, and I want to be Charlize Theron when I grow up. Or at least have a body that resembles hers in some way.
ETA: if I had just read back a few pages, I would have known that I was not alone in questioning Guy's makeup.

Originally, they had filmed scenes with Guy as he looks normally. This all got cut. It's still a stunning looking movie but you could pilot a spaceship through the plot holes!

I finally watched this on pay TV last night. The best I can do is that while I 'got' it, it still made no sense. I have to wonder if the very obviously set-up sequel will ever be made.
Loved the trailer, bored to death by the movie.
